This Week in Women's Basketball History - November 26 - December 2

2023-24 is the 50th season of women's basketball at UTC. We will travel back in time to explore the Mocs history one week at a time.

The Mocs, also known as the Mocettes and Lady Mocs in previous seasons, are 49-48 for all games played November 26-December 2 and sport a 19-10 record at home. Chattanooga went 6-3 in Maclellan Gym and 13-7 in The McKenzie Arena.

The time around Thanksgiving is generally tournament time. The Mocs participated in 22 tournaments during this week in their history. The team went 21-18 and won the SMU Hoops for the Cure, beat Auburn to go 3-0 at the Challenge in Music City and claimed the St. Mary's Hilton Concord Classic title in California, just to name a few.

The longest win streak in program history started this week in the 2003-04 season. The Mocs fell to Butler in the opening game of the Sonesta Coconut Grove Classic in Coconut Grove, Fla. That caused head coach Wes Moore and his staff to make changes to the lineup. The next day, the Mocs beat Hampton by 31 points and sparked a 27-game win streak.

Miranda Warfield, dropped from the starting lineup, came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points, making 6-of-11 from the 3-point line. Nicole Mattison, making the start, had nine points and nine rebounds. Tiffani Roberson dropped in 12 points and Heather McDivitt, 5-for-5 from the charity stripe, had 11 points. Katie Galloway dished out eight assists and added 10 points.

This week is also special for one of the Mocs greatest wins. On November 26, 2014, Hall of Fame head coach Jim Foster led the Mocs to their second win over Tennessee in three years. The Lady Vols, ranked fourth in the country under third-year head coach Holly Warlick, fell 67-63 at Chattanooga.

At the half, UTC held a 16-point lead, but that went away in the early goings of the second. The Lady Vols tied the game 57-57 with 4:31 to play. UTC regained the lead, but Tennessee tied it up three more times, the final 63-63 with 1:05 to play. The Lady Vols chance to take the lead was thwarted on a block by Kieana Gilbert. UTC drew fouls on the next two trips down the court while getting stops on the defensive end but made just two of four free throw attempts. Tennessee was unsuccessful on their final trip down the court and KaVonne Towns drew the foul. She drained both of her shots with three seconds on the clock to seal the win.

Gilbert led all scorers with a career-high 27 points and Destiny Bramblett added 12 in the win. She made two of Chattanooga's four 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds. The Mocs shot 53.3% for the game while Tennessee was 23-61 (37.7%) from the field.

Chattanooga played host to #1 Connecticut in 2015 and traveled to play the Huskies the next year at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. The game in the Roundhouse drew 6,104 fans, seventh-most to watch the women's team in the arena.

Chattanooga made 40 field goals, a McKenzie Arena record, in a 93-76 win over Georgia Southern in the Roundhouse in 1989. In that same game, the Mocs had an arena-record 29 assists. Kim Brown led the team with 30 points.

TITLE IX ENABLES EQUALITY FOR WOMEN IN SPORTS
In 1972 Congress enacted the Title IX of the Education Amendments stating: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

50 SEASONS OF CHATTANOOGA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The 2023 season for the Chattanooga women's basketball team marks a major landmark for the program and the university, as UTC women's basketball officially celebrates its 50th season of competition as a university sponsored athletic program. Following the adoption of the Title IX legislation back in 1972, UTC added women's basketball, tennis and volleyball programs to its roster of athletic teams, bringing on five decades of history and success for each of the teams. Chattanooga WBB will be putting on multiple promotions and content pieces throughout the 2023-24 season to celebrate the program's history, culminating in the team hosting its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion during the Mocs' February 3 matchup against Furman at McKenzie Arena.
