2022-23 Year in Review

The 2002 Mocs soccer team won the Southern Conference regular season title for the first time in school history.

The 2022-23 athletics season was another outstanding year for the Chattanooga Mocs. UTC won three Southern Conference titles and six programs were represented in the postseason. The Mocs had five All-Americans, five conference Players of the Year, two SoCon Tournament MVPs, three individual SoCon Champs and 46 all-conference honorees. 

Chattanooga scored 104.5 points in the Division I LEARFIELD Director's Cup competition.  The Mocs placed 158th in the nation, their highest finish since 2016.

Jake Stephens

Men’s Basketball (Dan Earl, head coach) • 18-17, 7-11 SoCon/7th
• The Mocs finished with an 18-17 overall record in head coach Dan Earl's first season at the helm to notch the program's fourth-straight winning season and eighth season in the last 10 with 18 or more wins.
• Chattanooga reached the Southern Conference Tournament title game for the second-straight season after a miraculous run as the No. 7 seed which also marked the 20th all-time title game appearance for the program. The Mocs dropped an 88-79 decision to No. 1 Furman in the title contest.
• Jake Stephens set a UTC program SoCon Tournament record with 92 points over a four-game stretch in March. He scored 20 or more points in all four games and was named to the Southern Conference All-Tournament Team.
• Chattanooga led NCAA Divsion I basketball in threes made per game (11.4) and total threes made (398) which both set new program records.
• Jake Stephens became one of just two players in NCAA Division I over the last 30-plus years to achieve 1,800 career points, 900 career rebounds, 300 career assists and 200 career blocks. He became just the 23rd player in the past 25 seasons to notch 1,800 points, 900 rebounds and 200 blocks in a career.
• In addition to Stephens, Jamal Johnson was tabbed to the Southern Conference All-Tournament Team after a strong four games in Asheville. Johnson scored 25 points and connected on the game-winning three during an 85-82 win over No. 2 Samford in the quarterfinal round. 
• Jake Stephens earned All-Southern Conference First Team (media) and Second Team (coaches) laurels while Sam Alexis earned a spot on the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team (coaches).
• The program set a new record with eight student-athletes earning Dean's List honors. The 3.07 team GPA marked the third highest on record. Jake Stephens and Jamal Johnson notched perfect 4.0 GPAs.

SoCon Champions

Women’s Basketball (Shawn Poppie, head coach) • 20-13, 9-5 SoCon/T2nd/Tournament Champions • NCAA 1st Round
• UTC defeated regular season champion Wofford in the SoCon Tournament finals to capture its 19th SoCon Championships. Mocs are 19-0 in SoCon Tournament finals. 
• Mocs advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 16th time.
• Raven Thompson became the first freshman to earn SoCon Tournament MVP honors.  She was also named SoCon Freshman of the Year. 
• Yaz Wazeerud-Din made the All-SoCon first team, while Thompson earned spots on the second team and all-freshman squads.  
• Addie Porter joined Wazeerud-Din and Thompson on the SoCon All-Tournament First Team, while Abbey Cornelius made the second team.
• Shawn Poppie was named WBCA Spalding® Maggie Dixon NCAA Division I Rookie Coach of the Year. 
• Audrey Canter won the SoCon Pinnacle Award for having the highest GPA on the Championship team.
• Cornelius earned the Dayle May Award for having the highest cumulative GPA among all female senior student-athletes at UTC. 
• Cornelius, Porter and Sigrun Olafsdottir were named to the  College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.

Beach VB Recap

Beach Volleyball (Darin Van Horn, head coach) • 19-15, 7-3 OVC/2nd
• Chattanooga finished the season with a 19-15 overall record and a 7-3 tally inside league place to finish as Ohio Valley Conference regular season runner-ups. UTC dropped a 3-1 contest to No. 3 Morehead State in the OVC Tournament Semifinals.
• The 19 wins marked the most for the program in a single season since its creation in 2020. 
• Neva Clark was tabbed the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year after kicking off the season as the OVC Preseason Player of the Year.
• Neva Clark and Joy Courtright were named the Ohio Valley Conference's Pair of the Year. Clark and Courtright went a combined 17-9 together as a pair in the No. 1 slot and also landed a spot on the All-OVC First Team.
• McKenna Faychak and Maddie Lecik were selected to the All-OVC Second Team after a successful campaign at the No. 2 pairing. Faychak and Lecik also were tabbed to the OVC All-Tournament Team after going a perfect 4-0 in postseason play.
• The team set a program record with a 3.67 overall team GPA and also set new marks with 11 on the Dean's List and five achieving 4.0's. Among the perfect 4.0's include: Neva Clark, McKenna Faychak, Grace Frigaard and Maddie Lecik.

2022 SoCon Cross Country Championships

Cross Country (Andy Meyer, head coach) • Men (6th SoCon/20th NCAA Regional) • Women (4th SoCon/26th NCAA Regional)
• Maddie Wheatcroft and Leah Boyd made the SoCon All-Freshman team.
• Jonathan Boyd earned the Dayle May Award for having the highest cumulative GPA among all male senior student-athletes at UTC. 
• Boyd, Eric Mitchell, Jasper Wilson, Imani Bryant, Emmy Davis, Lesley Green, Julianna McReynolds and Emma Russum all were named to the College Sports Communicators All-District team for Cross Country & Track & Field. 
• Women’s cross country/track & field set a program record with 24 on the AD Honor Roll in the fall. 

Ailym Ford

Football (Rusty Wright, head coach) • 7-4, 5-3 SoCon/T3rd 
• Seven wins for the 25th time in school history. Coach Rusty Wright became just the fourth head coach with the program to have a .500 or better record in each of his first four seasons in charge. The last “Brother” Bill Oliver (1980-83). 
• Finished the season ranked No. 23 in the Stats Perform FCS National Rankings and tied for 24th in Coaches Poll. It’s the 12th time ending a season ranked in the final polls, seventh as a DI program. 
• Four different Mocs earned First Team All-America honors in at least one nationally recognized squad: DR Kameron Brown, OL McClendon Curtis, DT Devonnsha Maxwell & Edge Jay Person. Only South Dakota State’s five first teamers eclipsed the Mocs mark. 
• Maxwell set the school and conference record for career sacks with 37.5 passing former Mocs defensive end Davis Tull (37.0, 2011-14). 
• Person was Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year, while Curtis claimed the Jacobs Blocking Trophy. The squad boasted six first team and four second team All-SoCon honorees along with three on the All-Freshman team. 
• RB Ailym Ford ran for a personal-best 1,199 yards. He is the first rusher in school history to record three 1,000-yard campaigns. 
• Six merited CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District consideration: WR Tyron Arnett, P/K Gabe Boring, DB Reuben Lowery III, K Aaron Sears, DB CaMiron Smith & OL Reid Williams. 
• School-record seven seniors earned National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society recognition: P/K Gabe Boring, OL McClendon Curtis, QB Preston Hutchinson, WR Andrew Manning, P Jason Pierce, K Aaron Sears and DB CaMiron Smith. Smith also claimed a spot on the FCS ADA Academic All-Star team. 

Men's Golf YIR

Men’s Golf (Blaine Woodruff, head coach) • 2nd SoCon • T23rd NCAA Championships
Returned to NCAA Regionals as a team for the first time since 2014 and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2012.  
Four team wins is second most for the program behind five by the 2007-08 edition. This year’s group won at N.C. State, Furman, Wofford and Indiana. 
Finished 2021-22 ranked No. 135 in the country. Ended 2022-23 at No. 41, the highest end of year rating since 2012 (No. 27). 
SoCon-high four All-SoCon performers: Paul Conroy, Garrett Engle, Samuel Espinosa and John Houk. Ties the school record with the quartet of Jonathan Hodge, Fredrik Qvicker, Derek Rende and Ben Rickett in 2008. 
Two PING All-East Region selections in Conroy and Houk. They are the 13th and 14th selection in school history and first since 2013 when U.S. Amateur Champ Steven Fox and Chris Robb claimed spots. 
School record scoring average of 285.03 was 44 under par, the first under par campaign in program history. 
Conroy (N.C. State) and Houk (Wofford) claimed individual wins with both tying the school record with 62s during their wins.
Conroy (-8) and Houk (-4) authored just the fourth and fifth under-par individual campaigns in school history. They joined Hodge and Jaeger there as well. Hodge played 2007-08 at 9 under, while Jaeger did it twice with a 1-under tally in 2010-11 followed by 22 under in 2011-12. 

Dorota YIR

Women’s Golf (Colette Murray, head coach) • 7th SoCon
12th NCAA Tournament appearance with six as a team (2009-14) and six individuals: Emma de Groot ‘11 (2008), Emily McLennan ‘16 (2016), Monica San Juan ‘19 (2019), Esme Hamilton ‘22 (2022) & Zalewska (2022 & 2023). 
Zalewska’s win at Raleigh Regionals was the first for the program in NCAA postseason play. It was UTC’s 6th with team wins in 1998 (Men’s XC) & 2012 (Men’s Golf) along with three other individuals: Nic Crider (1998 Men’s XC), Shannon Wommack (2005 Women’s XC) & PGA Tour pro Stephan Jaeger (2012 Men’s Golf).
Zalewska’s 12-under 204 total in Raleigh set a new scoring record for 54 holes, while 135 after 36 tied her own mark while creating a new vs par (-9).
2nd trip to the NCAA Championships (2009 team).
Two Southern Conference awardees: Zalewska (All-SoCon) & Kera Healey (All-Freshman).
Zalewska set new season records for Cards in 60s (11), Par/Better Rounds (19), Par 5 Scoring (4.88) & Par/Better Tournaments (6). New career records from Zalewska include Cards in 60s (16), Par/Better Rounds (41) & Par/Better Tournament (12).

Maggie Shaw YIR

Soccer (Gavin McKinney, head coach) • 8-5-5, 5-1-3 SoCon/T1st
• The Mocs won their first SoCon Regular Season Title. 
• Maggie Shaw was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in her career. 
• Gavin McKinney earned SoCon Coach of the Year Honors for the second time.  
• The Mocs held SoCon opponents to just five goals in eight matches. 
• Shaw earned a spot on the SoCon first team alongside fellow captain Mackenzie Smith. Smith led the Mocs in scoring this season with five goals, two game-winners, and one assist.
• Second Team All-SoCon members included senior Avery Catlett, freshmen Clarissa Salinas and Caroline Ekern along with transfer Birna Johannsdottir.
• Ekern and Salinas were also named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team, along with Zoey Mize and Caroline Richvalsky.
• Catlett made the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. 
• Program-record 27 made the Dean’s List in the fall.

Softball YIR

Softball (Frank Reed, head coach) • 25-27, 7-11 SoCon/6th 
• Addy Keylon earned First Team All-SoCon honors, while  Olivia Lipari and  Kaili Phillips earned a spot on the second team. 
• Peja Goold, Riley Kokinda and Zoe Wright made the SoCon All-Freshman Team.
• Head coach Frank Reed earned his 700th career win at UTC with a 5-0 victory against Detroit Mercy on March 5.  
• Olivia Lipari earned spot on the SoCon All-Tournament Team.
• Alyssa Lavdis struck out 15 in a 5-0 win against Detroit Mercy, one shy of the school record.
• Emily Coltharp, Kaili Phillips, Olivia Lipari, Alyssa Lavdis and Brooke Parrott all made the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
 

Men's Tennis SoCon Trophy

Men’s Tennis (Chuck Merzbacher, head coach) • 18-7, 6-1 SoCon/1st
• Chattanooga captured its first ever Southern Conference Regular Season title after finishing the season 6-1 inside league play and 18-7 overall. 
• The Mocs continued its success in the Southern Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed and advanced to its first title match since 2006. UTC eventually finished runner-ups after dropping a 4-0 contest to No. 3 ETSU. 
• The 18 wins for the program marked the most in a single season since 2005.  
• Head coach Chuck Merzbacher earned his second Southern Conference Coach of the Year honor following the historic season. He surpassed 500 career wins as an NCAA Division I head coach following a 6-1 win at The Citadel on March 19. 
• Chattanooga posted a pair of historic regular season victories over ETSU (W, 4-3) on March 24 and Furman (W, 5-2) on April 1. The win over the Bucs marked the program's first since 2001 while the victory over the Paladins was the first since 2005. 
• The Mocs placed six on the All-Southern Conference postseason teams which marked a program record. Kerim Hyatt (first team – singles & second team doubles), Peyton Gatti (first team doubles), Simon Labbe (first team doubles), Gabriel Castillo (second team singles), Kristof Kincses (second team doubles) and Cortland Grove (all-freshman). 
• Kerim Hyatt and Simon Labbe earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® Team honors. The team posted a 3.474 overall GPA with Ryan Mudre and Quinten Nevenhoven achieving 4.0's. 

Jessie Young Caroline Gibbens YIR

Women’s Tennis (Chad Camper, head coach) • 14-8, 3-4 SoCon/5th 
• Chattanooga finished the season with a 14-8 overall record and 3-4 mark inside SoCon play. The Mocs have won 14 or more matches in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2016 and 2017. 
• After a 7-1 start to the season, Chattanooga earned a No. 70 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Rankings on February 21. 
• The No. 70 ITA ranking marked the program's second national ranking under current head coach Chad Camper and the team's first since the 2020-21 season (No. 66). 
• Jessie Young (second team singles & doubles), Rozalie Dohnalova (second team singles & doubles), Lucia Garrigues-Melendez (second team doubles) and Caroline Gibbens (second team doubles) all earned postseason All-Southern Conference laurels. 
• Jessie Young and Nicole Abel were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® Team.  
• The team posted a 3.20 overall GPA and placed four on the Dean's List. 

Lesley Green YIR

Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field (Andy Meyer, head coach) • 8th SoCon Indoor/T8th SoCon Outdoor
• Junior Lesley Green earned All-SoCon indoor honors with a third place finish in both the 3000M and 5000M races. 
• Delaney Mulick (800M) and Maddie Wheatcroft (Mile) were named SoCon All-Freshman at the indoor championships.
• Green won the 10000M race at the SoCon Outdoor Championships, finishing more than 47 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. She also earned All-SoCon honors with a third place finish in the 5000M run. 
• Wheatcroft placed ninth in the 1500M race to earn a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman team at the outdoor championships. 

Natalie Tyson YIR

Volleyball (Julie Torbett, head coach) • 17-16, 10-6 SoCon/4th
• Chattanooga posted its first winning season since 2016 after finishing 17-16 overall and 10-6 inside SoCon play during head coach Julie Torbett's first season at the helm. The 17 wins were the most by a first-year head coach in program history.
• UTC dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to No. 8 Furman in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals following a thirlling 3-2 win over No. 5 Wofford in the quarterfinal round. It marked the program's first semifinal appearance since 2016.
• The Mocs successful season saw a five-match winning streak over a two-week stretch on October to notch the program's longest winning streak since 2015. Included in the five-match streak, UTC won three-straight SoCon road matches for the first time since 2005.
• Natalie Tyson provided one of the most blistering single individual seasons in program history. Tyson recorded 469 total kills which is fifth-most for a Moc in a single season in program history.
• Paige Gallentine led the team and Southern Conference with 596 total digs and a 4.62 digs/set average. The 596 total digs were 10th most for a Moc in single season program history.
• Paige Gallentine surpassed 1,400 career digs during the season and ended the year sitting at 1,445. The grand dig total currently ranks seventh all-time in program history heading into the 2023 campaign.
• Natalie Tyson's efforts in the Southern Conference Tournament were spectacular, recording a combined 54 kills over the two matches and ten sets (5.40 kills/set) while posting double-doubles in both matches behind 15 digs in each. She was named to the Southern Conference All-Tournament Team.
• Natalie Tyson was named to the All-Southern Conference First Team while Paige Gallentine earned Second Team honors. It marked the first time since 2015 UTC was represented on both the first and second teams.
• Natalie Tyson's first team selection was the first for a Moc since 2016 while Gallentine became the first UTC libero since 2015 to earn postseason honors.
• Paige Gallentine (Defense) and Natalie Tyson (Offense) swept the Southern Conference Player of the Month (November) honors to become the first duo to do so in program history. Gallentine became just the second Moc all-time to win the award twice in a career after picking a laurel up in October 2021.
• The team posted its fifth semester with a 3.5 or better team GPA after finishing the year with a 3.52 tally. Sydney Hall, Kate Neill and Natalie Tyson all posted perfect 4.0's.

Braden Palmer YIR

Wrestling (Kyle Ruschell, head coach) • 9-11, 6-2 SoCon/3rd • T44th NCAAs
Two Mocs won SoCon titles: Brayden Palmer (133) & Rocky Jordan (174). Palmer earned Most Outstanding Wrestler at the SoCon Championships, the 23rd Moc to earn SoCon Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Three Mocs earned NCAA Championships bids with automatic qualification for Palmer and Jordan with an at large pick for Matthew Waddell (184). 46th NCAA DI Tournament appearance. Palmer is the 200th qualifier in school history with Jordan following as 201 and Waddell’s as 202.
The 4.0 team points scored in Tulsa was the most since the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The scoring came from two wins by Palmer and one from Jordan.  Both Jordan and Palmer scored bonus points with one major decision each. The two bonus-point wins were the first for Chattanooga since Corey Mock scored a 9-1 major decision over Navy's Peyton Walsh in the first round at 165 pounds of the 2014 NCAA Championships.
The Mocs tied Campbell for the top SoCon finish at the NCAA Championships. SoCon Champion Appalachian State was 52nd with 1.0 team point, while Gardner-Webb scored 0.5 and finished 56th. UTC finished ahead of ACC members Virginia (48th - 2.5) and Duke (56th - 0.5), PAC 12's Cal State Bakersfield (53rd - 0.5) and the Big 12's Wyoming (50th - 2.0).
Jordan was an All-SoCon pick. He went 16-2 with dual scoring of 66-6 with 200-36 match scoring for the season.
Five Chattanooga Mocs were listed on the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Scholar All-Americans. The group includes senior Weston Wichman and graduate students Logan Ashton, Jake Boyd, Rocky Jordan and Franco Valdes.
Palmer finished second at 133 in the Southern Scuffle. He is now 11-2 in the event.
