Women’s Basketball Takes First SoCon Roadtrip of the Season with Road Games Against UNCG, WCU

Mocs look to remain atop the Southern Conference standings following road matchups with the Spartans and Catamounts.

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Chattanooga women's basketball hits the road for the first time in conference play this week with the Mocs traveling to Greensboro and Cullowhee for a pair of road SoCon tilts against UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina.

The Mocs (15-3, 3-0 SoCon) roll into the weekend red-hot with UTC holding a 4-0 record in 2024, including having won their first three conference games of the year. Chattanooga will have a big target on its back, however, as the Spartans (13-6, 2-2 SoCon) and Catamounts (5-14, 0-4 SoCon) both aim to make up some ground in the early stages of the SoCon title race.

Thursday's game against UNCG is schedule for a 7 p.m. ET tipoff on ESPN+, with UTC's radio broadcast available on 96.1 FM/100.3 FM/1070 AM. ABOUT CHATTANOOGA (15-3, 3-0 SoCon)
The Mocs currently reign supreme in the SoCon, sitting as the final remaining unbeaten team in conference play with a 3-0 record. Chattanooga continues to serve as one of the most efficient teams in the country when it comes to shooting the ball, with the Mocs currently ranking 12th in three-point percentage (.378), 14th in free throw percentage (.786) and 39th in field goal percentage (.454) nationally. Additionally, UTC is currently ranked 13th in the country in scoring defense (54.1), providing the perfect offense-defense mix to find success this season. Jada Guinn remains Chattanooga's top scorer, as the grad student is currently averaging 18.3 points/game.

ABOUT UNCG (13-6, 2-2 SoCon)
After a strong start to their 2023-24 season, the Spartans of UNCG have hit a bit of a lull as the SoCon season ramps up with Greensboro sitting .500 in the league. Despite having dropped their previous two road contests at Mercer and Samford, the Spartans are no slouch whatsoever, specifically when playing at home. UNCG is currently a perfect 11-0 at home this season and will look to build upon that streak on Thursday when the Mocs come to town. UNCG has one of the best offensive-defensive duos in the conference in Jayde Gamble and Khalis Cain, who each offer opposite skillsets for the Spartand to utilize. Gamble leads the team in scoring (13.3 points/game) while leading the entire Southern Conference in steals (2.8 per game). Cain on the other hand is one of the SoCon's top rebounders, averaging 8.1 per game including a league-high 3.8 offensive boards/game.

ABOUT WCU (5-14, 0-4 SoCon)
It's been tough sledding for the 2023-24 Catamount team, as Western Carolina enters the weekend on a four-game losing skid. Of WCU's five wins on the year, the Catamounts only have one win over a Division I team having defeated UNC Wilmington 54-43 back in November. This season the Catamounts have had little to hang their hat on statistically, but one player they have turned to often is junior guard Chelsea Wooten. Wooten is one of the few bright spots in what has otherwise been a struggle-filled season, as Wooten serves as one of the conference's premier three-point shooters with a league-high 46 made threes this season. The junior is averaging 11.3 points/game for the Catamounts, alongside having a team-high 43 assists on the year.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET
The last time the Mocs played against UNCG came on February 25, 2023 when UTC traveled to Greensboro, ultimately falling to the Spartans in a narrow 56-54 loss. The Mocs have not won in Greensboro since 2018, but in the grand scheme of things the all-time series skews towards Chattanooga with the Mocs having a 49-13 record against UNCG. Against WCU, the Mocs hold a record of 83-13 all-time against the Catamounts. Most recently, UTC took down Western in Cullowhee 62-44 on February 23, 2023. In the last 13 seasons, the Mocs have only lost to WCU twice, once last season and the other in 2020.

• Guinn has won a total of three different Player of the Week honors this season. She is a two-time SoCon POTW and one-time TSWA POTW.
• The Mocs have won their last eight home games. It marks the longest home win streak for the team since 2015-16 (nine straight wins).
• The duo of Guinn & Thompson has scored 574 of the Mocs' 1,158 points this year, with Guinn averaging 18.3 and Thompson averaging 14.4.

• Kohn is also gunning to break a 20-year-old program record for season three-point percentage. She currently has a season 3PT percentage of .494, and the program record currently stands at .450.

50 SEASONS OF CHATTANOOGA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The 2023 season for the Chattanooga women's basketball team marks a major landmark for the program and the university, as UTC women's basketball officially celebrates its 50th season of competition as a university sponsored athletic program. Following the adoption of the Title IX legislation back in 1972, UTC added women's basketball, tennis and volleyball programs to its roster of athletic teams, bringing on five decades of history and success for each of the teams. Chattanooga WBB will be putting on multiple promotions and content pieces throughout the 2023-24 season to celebrate the program's history, culminating in the team hosting its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion during the Mocs' February 3 matchup against Furman at McKenzie Arena.
