CHATTANOOGA---The 23rd-ranked Chattanooga Mocs have another road challenge ahead. This week's matchup is at The Citadel Saturday at 2 p.m., in Hagood Stadium. The Bulldogs are 4-5 but are on a roll winning their last two and coming off a bye week.
Â
It's a game with lots of subplots, but why dig when there are a couple of obvious ones right on the surface. The Mocs look to keep pace at the top of the SoCon standings. At 4-2 in the league, the good guys are one game behind Mercer in first (5-1) with Western Carolina slotted in between at 4-1.
Â
The Bulldogs as mentioned above are on the march for two things. A win Saturday followed by one next week at Wofford would clinch a .500 or better season record as well as a level league mark. Both teams have a lot on the line.
Â
So what are this week's questions?
Â
Isn't this (historically) an easy matchup?
No. This is a matchup that's like a trip to the dentist (Sorry Dr. Bubba Trundle). The Bulldogs always play to max effort so when they're light on talent, they're always grinding. When the talent matches the motor, they're a bear to face. The Mocs have won 11 of the last 15 games; however, 10 of those 15 games were decided by one score (1-8 points). In fact, two of the last three trips to Charleston were OT affairs.
Â
Tell me more about Luke Schomburg…
Our backup, now starting quarterback, is one you'll enjoy. He's an outgoing, engaging type that will definitely fit well in the huddle. He has all the physical tools you can ask for evidenced by connecting on nine passes last Saturday for 20+ yards to five different receivers.
Â
He's also the only QB in school history to start & win a road playoff game (2023 at Austin Peay).
Â
How close is the defense to the interception record?
The Mocs have 15 on the year, most since the same number in 2021. But the record, which dates back to
1979 is 26. Five more picks and the defense is the sixth overall and first since 1987 (23) to collect 20. Most impressive in this run, five different Mocs have multiple interceptions led by CB
D'Arco Perkins-McAllister's three. Nine total have at least one with every position group included.

Notes
- A win Saturday clinches a winning SoCon ledger. That would be six in a row for Coach Rusty Wright, a record for a Mocs head coach. In fact, his Mocs are the only conference school NOT to have a losing league record over the last six campaigns.
- In five wins: 189.4 rush yards per game/Reggie Davis: 103.4 ypg. In four losses, 56.8 per game/Davis: 40.0 ypg.
- Average time of possession in five wins: 35:18 In four losses? 26:13. The Mocs and Bulldogs along with Mercer are the only teams in the conference with positive TOP numbers for the season.
- Defense allowed just 64 first downs over first five SoCon games (12.8/game). Western Carolina accumulated 33. That's still an average of 16.2.
- WR Javin Whatley (16 TD receptions) needs four TD catches to become the third Moc with 20+ joining Joe Burke (25: 1977-80) and Cos DeMatteo (23: 1998-01).
- Defensive front recorded multiple sacks in 39 of Wright's 61 games to date. 379 tackles for loss (6.2/gm) & 145 sacks (2.4) over that timeframe.
- Schomburg's 22.4 yards per completion (314/14) at Western Carolina was the most by a Mocs QB since Nick Tiano's 24.4 (268/11) in the 2019 comeback win over The Citadel.
