Chattanooga (20-10, 12-5 SoCon) has locked up either the No. 2 OR No. 3 seed in next weekend's SoCon Tournament in Asheville with final seeding dependent on its own result Saturday, in addition to UNCG who also sits at 12-5. With a UTC win and UNCG loss, the Mocs will claim the No. 2 seed while any other outcome will land the squad in the No. 3 spot.
Western Carolina (21-9, 10-7 SoCon) enters the weekend in a two-way tie with Furman for the No. 4 seed and can slide anywhere from No. 4 to No. 6 dependent on results from itself, Furman and Wofford, who trails by a game at 9-8 but owns the tiebreak over the Catamounts. WCU is led by Vonterius Woolbright, one of top players in mid-major basketball, who leads the SoCon in scoring (21.6 ppg), rebounding (12.0) and minutes per game (34.6).

GAME NOTES
Chattanooga ∙ Western Carolina ∙ SoCon
MOCS EARN 20TH WIN, BEATS MERCER 84-75
- Chattanooga (20-10, 12-5 SoCon) notched the 22nd, 20-win season in program history with an 84-75 victory over Mercer on Wednesday night inside McKenzie Arena. With the win & a FUR loss at WCU, UTC has clinched either the No. 2 OR No. 3 seed in next weekend's SoCon Tournament in Asheville.
Jan Zidek (24) &
Honor Huff (21) combined for 45 points while
Sam Alexis (13/17) posted his eighth double-double during the win.
CHATTANOOGA/WESTERN CAROLINA HISTORY
- Chattanooga & Western Carolina will meet for the 103rd time in the all-time series and for the 88th time in regular season SoCon play. UTC holds a 71-31 all-time edge over WCU while playing to a 40-6 record in the Scenic City. The Mocs captured a gritty 91-85 victory over the Catamounts earlier this season back on January 31 in Cullowhee.
20-WIN MARK HITS AGAIN
- Chattanooga posted its 22nd, 20-win season in program history with Wednesday's win. It's the fifth 20-win campaign in the last 10 seasons under four different head coaches (Wade/McCall/Paris(2x)/Earl). It's the fifth-straight season with 18+ wins, the longest such streak since a five-year stretch from 1990-95 under Mack McCarthy.
OH, BROTHER...
- Five days after his brother Brian Earl (Cornell) earned win No. 20,
Dan Earl notched his first ever 20-win season after Wednesday's win. The Earl brothers are one of five active sets of siblings serving as DI head coaches (Drew/Hurley/Jones/Miller) & now join the Drew's (Bryce - GCU & Scott - Baylor) as the only ones with 20+ wins.
HOME SWEET HOME
- Following Wednesday's win, Chattanooga earned its 12th home win of the season which matches the 2021-22 total for the most since 13 in 2015-16. UTC is 12-3 this year in the Roundhouse and 14-4 in its last 18 dating back to last season.
HUFF & PUFF...
-
Honor Huff posted his fifth-straight 20+ scoring effort with 21 points (7-13 FG, 3-10 3PT) in Wednesday's win over Mercer. It's the longest such streak since Malachi Smith became just the third Moc to record six-straight during a stretch from 1/5/22-1/22/22. Huff sits fourth in the SoCon in PPG (17.7) this season while his 531 total points passes
Jake Stephens (527, 2022-23) for 23rd most in UTC single-season history.
HUFF & MORE PUFF...
-
Honor Huff became the fourth Moc to ever record 100+ 3PT FG in a single season after knocking down three triples Wednesday. His 101 3PTM this season is fourth most in program history & is just seven shy of Stephen McDowell (108, 2007-08) for third. Huff ranks fourth in NCAA DI in 3PTM (101) & sixth in 3PTM per game (3.37).
SAM THE MAN ALEXIS
-
Sam Alexis turned in a dominating inside effort during Wednesday's win, notching his eighth double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds (seven offensive). The rebounding performance notched Alexis' fourth game this season with 15 or more, tying both the single season and career record for 15+ rebound games. He's the first to record four in a season since Clifford Morgan in 1984-85.
