Mocs Set To Battle Governors in McKenzie Arena

CHATTANOOGA, TENN -- UTC Women's Basketball plays its second game of a three-game home stretch on Thursday night at 6 p.m., taking on in-state foe, Austin Peay.

In the second game of Chattanooga's historic 2023-24 season where it finished 28-5, it paid a visit to F&M Bank Arena to take on Austin Peay. It was a close battle throughout the night, but ultimately, the Mocs left town with a 57-52 win. Raven Thompson (20 points) and Jada Guinn (18 points) combined for 38 of Chattanooga's 57 points in the road victory. 

Series History:
In a series that dates back to 1975, Thursday night's battle will be the 44th all-time meeting between the two schools with UTC holding a 34-9 record in those games. The Mocs have won nine out of the last 10 in the series. At home, Chattanooga is 16-5 against Austin Peay in 21 meetings. 

Scouting Chattanooga
Chattanooga (2-3) is looking to get back in the win column as it lost to Troy on the road and UAB at home in its last two games. As a team, Chattanooga gives up on average 67.2 points per game while scoring 63 points per game. On the glass, it is currently getting outrebounded by seven per game. Defensively, the Mocs have forced 82 turnovers while turning the ball over 72 themselves through five games. 

Junior guard Caia Elisaldez, the Preseason SoCon Player of the Year, has led the way so far for Chattanooga's offense, scoring 14.8 points per game. She also leads the Mocs in assists with 20 on the year. Chattanooga's other lone player averaging double-digits in scoring is junior forward Gianna Corbitt with 10.4 points per game and a team-high 5.8 rebounds per game. Corbitt's best statistical game of the year came at Florida where she scored 21 points.

Scouting Austin Peay
Austin Peay (2-1) comes to the Roundhouse with wins over Division III Sewanee and Indiana State. The Governors lone loss came at home against No. 19 Vanderbilt where the ASUN member held close with the SEC institution, losing by a score of 75-65. Austin Peay is averaging 71 points a game this year against Division I opposition and allowing 74 points a game. Looking at all three of the Governors' games this year, it has outrebounded opponents 119 to 95. 

Last year's ASUN Sixth Player of the Year, Anovia Sheals, a guard from Daytona Beach, Florida, has had her way offensively to start the season, averaging a team-high16 points a game. She has scored in double-figures in each of Austin Peay's three games. Another guard, Kyra Perkins, who transferred in from JUCO Walters State, has also had a strong start to the season, averaging 13.3 points per game and a team-high six rebounds. Perkins was recently named the ASUN Newcomer of the Week.
