Last Time They Met
Nov. 25, 2023 | Chattanooga 63, Northern Kentucky 47
The two sides met in the Daytona Beach Classic over Thanksgiving weekend of the 2023-24 season where the Mocs dominated the Norse on their way to a 63-37 win. Jada Guinn led the Mocs in scoring with 18 points where she was 10-of-13 from the free-throw line. She also was one rebound away from a double-double with nine boards. One of the key statistical categories that went Chattanooga's way that day was 3-pointers, with the Mocs making eight to the Norse's three.
Series History:
In a series that dates back to
1976, the Mocs and the Norse have only played each other
six times with the all-time record between the two programs split at
3-3. Chattanooga has won two in a row in the series and is 2-0 on its home court against Northern Kentucky. Prior to playing in November of 2023, the Mocs and the Norse had not played each other since 1983,
Scouting Chattanooga
Chattanooga (2-4) is riding a three-game losing skid that it will attempt to get out of on Saturday. In all three of these losses to Troy, UAB, and Austin Peay, Chattanooga has allowed its opponent to shoot at least 41% from the field, as the home side will look to defend at a higher level against the Norse. A bright spot in the losing streak for the Mocs is their ability to knock down the deep ball, making a season-high seven triples against Troy and Austin Peay.
Chattanooga's leading scorer,
Caia Elisaldez, who averages 12.7 points per game, will look to have a bounce-back outing after scoring two points on Thursday night against Austin Peay.
Gianna Corbitt had a strong performance for the Mocs in their last game, scoring a game-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting and a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. The sophomore is Chattanooga's lone other player who is currently averaging double-digit points per game with 11.7.
Scouting Northern Kentucky
Northern Kentucky (1-4) opened up the season with four straight defeats, before taking down Toledo 70-61 in its last game to get in the win column. NKU is coached by Jeff Hans, who is in his second year, after a successful 13-year stint at Thomas More, where he won two NCAA Division III National Championships and one NAIA National Championship.
The Norse has struggled defensively this season, giving up 77.2 points per game while allowing opponents to shoot it at a 47.9% rate. One of the things NKU has going for itself right now is a balanced offensive attack. Mya Meredith scores 9.2 points per game while Maddie Moody and Karina Bystry both average 8.2 points per game. Bystry, a freshman guard, scored a career-high 18 points in the win over Toledo.
Last Home Game For A While
After Saturday's game, Chattanooga will go 15 days without a game inside its home gym of McKenzie Arena. The Mocs play two games in Southern California over Thanksgiving weekend before returning to their home court on December 7 against Bellarmine.
