NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Chattanooga opened the indoor track and field season Saturday at the Vanderbilt Winter Commodore Challenge in Nashville. Sophomore
Ryleigh Simmons picked up where she left off last season and laid claim to a program record set 21 years ago.
Â
"It was a solid opener for the sprint/jump women today," Mocs head coach
Steve Picucci said. "To have Ryleigh break the school record the first meet was a big highlight today!"
Â
Simmons ran a program record 7.71 second in the 60 meter dash, edging out the previous top time set by Latavia Shores in 2004. She was already knocking on the door after posting a time of 7.77 last season at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships.
Â
Stella Henry recorded a pair of personal records on the day. She posted a distance of 5.73 meters [18-9 ¾] in the long jump, finishing fifth overall. That beat out her previous best distance by 0.01 meters. She also ran a PR time of 7.85 in the 60 meter dash, running with teammate Simmons in the same heat.
Â
Freshman
Halle Carden tied for seventh in the high jump with a height of 1.62 meters [5-3 ¾]. She jumped 4.97 meters in the long jump and 10.96 meters in the triple jump where she placed 13th.
Â
Chattanooga will take time off for the holidays before getting right into it with the UAB Blazer and Vulcan Invite January 9-10.
