Penn State Wins 9th Southern Scuffle Crown, Mocs Place 4

Landon Jones

Landon Jones was one of four Chattanooga Mocs on the opening day of the Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Sportswear.

Overview
The Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Sportswear ended Sunday afternoon in the Roundhouse. Penn State out-lasted another outstanding field to claim the team title, its ninth all-time and first since 2019.

The Nittany Lions scored 143.5 points topping Penn (123.5) and Little Rock (106.0) in second and third, respectively.

Most Outstanding Wrestler: Dom Serrano, Northern Colorado
Gorrarian Award (Most Pins in Shortest Time): 149-Kelly Dunnigan, Penn (4/11:26)

Resources: Brackets | Attendance: 1,604

Breakdown
  • Most exciting finish? It came at 133. Northern Colorado's Dominic Serrano was down 4-1 after giving up a takedown to No. 10 Braxton Brown from Maryland. Time was dwindling as he escaped and then fought through Brown's defenses to get a buzzer-beating takedown for a 5-4 decision.
  • Most finalists: Penn State (5). Most placers: Penn (8).
  • The Nittany Lions averaged 11.04 points scored per wrestler with 13 entered in the event.
  • Chattanooga had four placers: 125 (3rd-Cooper Flynn/8th-Ty Tice), 174 (7th-Kamdyn Munro) & 184 (6th-Landon Jones).
  • True freshmen Ethan Uhorchuk and Kade Rule's runs ended in the blood round. Munro and Jones escaped the blood round with SV-1 decisions, while Tice advanced via medical forfeit.
  • 12th time with multiple placers for the Mocs including three in a row and eight of the last nine Scuffles. Three straight with four or more. Also, fifth time with four or more: 2006 (6), 2012 (4), 2024 (4), 2025 (4) & 2026 (4).
  • For the second consecutive year, Chattanooga had two placers in the same weight class in Flynn and Tice.
  • Flynn last wrestled in the Scuffle as a true freshman at Virginia Tech (2022). He fell in the blood round that year while reaching the podium as a senior.
  • Munro's pin in the seventh-place bout at 174 came after he was taken down in the first period. He worked his way on top while not being credited with a score and then the fall was called at the mat's edge. Stunning finish.
  • Jones' battle at 184 for fifth could've gone either way in regulation or overtime before Aidan Brenot of North Dakota State turned the tables in the final seconds to get the win. Brenot reached the round of 12 last year at the NCAA Championships.

Quotable
"I'm proud of the way the guys competed this weekend overall. To have four guys place, well as a coach you always want more. But happy with how we competed overall as a group. We have to build on is the effort and find different ways of scoring and finding ways to get our hand raised to get more and more guys on the podium." – Chattanooga Head Coach Kyle Ruschell

"It's awesome I grew up coming up to watch the Scuffle when I was little. Obviously, watching all those medal matches, it's always been a goal of mine to do it. To get to do it in front of the home fans and so many friends and family in the stands just makes you feel like you're back home. It's really cool to see and definitely really special." – Senior Cooper Flynn on career coming full circle with third-place finish in the Scuffle
