CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga men's basketball team (9-12/5-5 SoCon) was unable to overcome Davidson (17-3/10-0 SoCon) as the Wildcats knocked off the Mocs 92-70 before 9,234 in the McKenzie Arena. First half shooting woes ultimately doomed UTC as the team shot 27.3 percent (9-of-33) in the period, including a 0-for-12 mark from the three point line.
The Mocs got off to a sluggish start spotting Davidson to an 18-point lead, 32-14 at 6:16. A 14-6 run by UTC would give the Mocs the momentum it needed as the team sliced the lead down to 10 with less than a minute to play. UTC had a great look missing from inside five feet with two seconds left that would have cut the lead to eight.
However, Davidson's All-American Stephen Curry would silent the crowd right before the half with a 75-foot buzzer-beater to put the Wildcats up 13 at the half. Curry did it all for the Wildcats in the victory, scoring a game-high 32 points and recording eight assists and three steals.
Out of the locker rooms, Davidson picked up right where it left off as the Wildcats surged on a 10-3 run through the first five minutes of the half to extend its lead up to 20, 51-31.
The Mocs finally found its stroke from outside in the half, as the team went 7-of-10 from beyond the arc (70.0%), but it would not be enough as Davidson and Curry seemed to answer each UTC bucket. The Wildcat lead will eventually build up as big as 25 as Davidson won its 40th straight SoCon game.
Stephen McDowell led the Mocs in the loss with 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting, while Kevin Goffney ended with 16. Nicchaeus Doaks ended with his eighth double-double of the season, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Khalil Hartwell had nine points and tied a season-high with 13 rebounds in the loss.
Andrew Lovedale added 17 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Ben Allison chipped in 12 points for the Wildcats.
Next up for UTC will be Georgia Southern on Saturday, Jan. 31. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. from The McKenzie Arena and will be televised by SportSouth.
