CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga men's tennis team claimed a 6-1 victory over instate rival UT Martin while the women fell 5-2 to the Skyhawks Saturday afternoon at the Hixson Racquet Club.
The Mocs started by claiming the doubles point. Sam Parfitt and Alex Butnarcuic defeated Alfredo Krywacz 8-3 at No. 2 while Dakota Pate and Gordon Ruddell posted an 8-5 win over Petr Markov and Shuntaro Tsukiyama at No. 3. Pavel Vostrikov and Peter Sauska's match at No. 1 was suspended after the Mocs won the point.
From there, Chattanooga won five of the six singles matches. Sauska defeated Stephan Bruwer 6-2, 6-0 at the top spot and Pavel Vostrikov ran his match record to 3-2 with a win over Krywacz at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0.
Butnarcuic defeated Matt Harris 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 and Pate beat his opponent Tsukiyama in straight sets at No. 6. Parfitt and his opponent, Markov, split their first two matches with Parfitt winning the first set 6-3 then dropping the second 4-6. In a super tiebreak, Parfitt came out on top 10-7. The Mocs lone loss was at No. 3. Rick van de Bovenkamp fell 7-6 (2), 6-0 to Andrey Yesipov.
The women's team, suffering from injuries to key players, fell 5-2 to the Skyhawks.
Martin claimed he doubles point with wins at the top two spots. Martie Wahl and Belisa de Brito won their doubles match at No. 1 8-5 over Emily Hangstefer and Jennemieke van der Veek. At No. 2, Sara Leavy and Jody Tiley posted an 8-2 win over Shaina Singh and Brianna Wishing. Annie Green and Kate Ksiezopolski were leading their match at No. 3 by a 7-6 margin when it was called after Martin claimed the point.
In singles, freshmen Singh and van der Veek each tallied a win. Singh defeated Wahl 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the top spot while van der Veek beat de Brito 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(5) at the No. 3 position.
Hangstefer fell 6-4, 6-4 to Leavy at No. 2, while Tiley defeated Green 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 4. Alycia Le Merle defeated Wishing 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot and Ernestine Koornhos downed Ksiezopolski 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
Senior Beata Knizat is out for the season and freshman Charlotte Bossy is not playing due to injury.
The Lady Mocs fall to 2-5 and the men claim their first win to move to 1-4 overall. Both teams will be back in action next weekend when they host Jacksonville State at 1 p.m. at the Hixson Racquet Club. Admission is free.
