Soccer Nets Shutout Over USC Upstate; Three Named All-Tournament

Senior Serena Allen, junior Donna-Kay Henry and sophomore Lauren Wilson were named to the Border Classic All-Tournament team. Each team went 1-1 in the tournament with Morehead State claiming the title on goal differential.
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over USC Upstate Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Border Classic hosted by Gardner-Webb.
Of Chattanooga's seven games this season, it was the sixth decided by just one goal. Sophomore Becca Smith (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) has seen little action this year as she has recovered from a preseason injury, but made the most of her playing time Sunday with her fourth career game winning goal. Sophomore Hayley Sloan (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) sent a corner kick into the pack in front on the goal and Smith flicked it on with a header in the 72nd minute to move Chattanooga to 2-5 on the year.
"We're a much better team than our 2-5 record indicates," Chattanooga head coach J.D. Kyzer said. "We still have some things to work out before the [Southern] conference season gets underway and we're doing those things."
The Lady Mocs outshot USC Upstate (1-6) 25-11 with an 11-4 shots on goal advantage. UTC keeper, freshman Taylor Mangrum (Franklin, Tenn.) got the starting nod and made four saves on the day and recorded her first shutout. Upstate's keeper Collins nabbed 10 saves for the Spartans.
"Taylor has been very consistent for us," Kyzer said. "We are fortunate enough to have two very capable goal keepers and she's on right now, playing very well. She does a good job of being vocal and managing the box."
The win was UTC's second over Kyzer's alma mater, but was a bit more even as opposed to last year's 8-0 romp. The Spartans are led by first-year head coach Renee Lopez.
"We were on them today, but they are a much better team than we played last year," Kyzer said. "It's my alma mater and I'm really proud of them. They won their first game Friday night and they were really jacked up and excited."
Chattanooga will return to action with a road game against the University of Tennessee at Knoxville Sunday afternoon.
