Arnold, Mueller Earn Southern Conference Honors

Arnold named SoCon Freshman of the Year

ARNOLD SOCON FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR; MUELLER ALL-CONFERENCE

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga forward Chloe Arnold was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and sophomore forward Jordan Mueller was named to the league's all-conference second team, the conference announced Tuesday.

"Any individual award that you get, it takes a good team performance for good individual performances to come through," Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said. "Obviously it shows that the program is headed in the right direction when you receive individual awards."

Arnold is the first Chattanooga player to be named the league's Freshman of the Year and is the fifth UTC player since 2009 to be selected to the All-Freshman Team. She led Chattanooga in goals and scoring this season and recorded a hat trick in the Mocs' SoCon win over The Citadel.

"Fantastic achievement," McKinney said of his freshman. "We're extremely proud of Chloe. She's got a huge amount of potential. In league play she scored five goals, two of them being match winners.

"We just think the sky's the limit for her."

Mueller was selected by the league coaches to the All-Conference Second Team. She was second on the team in scoring and goals and led the Mocs in assists. She scored the game winner in the regular season-finale win over Wofford to secure a first-round bye for the Mocs.

"She was playing a different position this year," McKinney said. "We played her further forward up the field. Jordan's a warrior. She's tough as nails and showed that with her match winner against Wofford.

"A sophomore; another young one. Another player on the team that has a huge upside. I think she's only scratching the surface with what she can do going forward. We're extremely happy for Jordan and proud."

The pair each earned Player of the Week honors this season. Mueller was the SoCon Player of the Week after opening weekend where she scored two goals and assisted on the game winner against Austin Peay. Arnold was named the Tennessee Sports Writer's Association Player of the Week after her three goals, including the match winner, in Chattanooga's double-overtime win at The Citadel.

Furman's Andrew Burr was named the Coach of the Year, Samford's Jermaine Seoposenwe was named the Player of the Year and her teammate Allie Lourie was selected Defensive Player of the Year.

Furman placed six on the all-conference first team, Samford had four and Wofford and UNCG rounded out the 12-person team with one each. Samford, UNCG and Western Carolina each had two on the second team with Chattanooga, Wofford, Mercer and VMI each getting one.

The All-Freshman team had three from Samford, two from Mercer and UNCG and one each from Chattanooga, ETSU, Furman and Western Carolina.

Chattanooga posted a 5-10-4 overall record and finished sixth in the Southern Conference standings with a 3-4-2 mark. UTC earned a first-round bye to meet No. 3 seeded UNCG in the quarterfinals.

The SoCon Tournament will wrap up this weekend in Birmingham, Ala., with the semifinals Friday night. Top-seeded Furman will take on No. 4 Western Carolina while host Samford, regular season co-champion and the No. 2 seed will face the Spartans. The final will air on ESPN3 at 2 p.m. Eastern time.
