THOMSON TAKES SECOND IN 3000M AT BSC PANTHER ICE BREAKER

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga had nine Top 10 finishes Friday in the season-opening BSC Panther Ice Breaker at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The women's Distance Medley Relay teams finished 1-2 and Kennedy Thomson took second in the 3000 meter run. Newcomer Makenzie Jones was third in the Mile followed by teammate Sophia Neglia in fourth.

"The girls ran great today," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "Kennedy and Emily got us off well in the 3000. Kennedy's race was great getting second."

Thomson finished was just five seconds behind top finisher, former Moc Emily Drouin who now runs for UAB. She covered the distance in a time of 9:57.65. Emily Poole took sixth overall with a time of 10:29.05.

Jones won her heat and placed third overall with a time of 5:17.98. Neglia was third in the first heat and finished fourth overall with a PR time of 5:22.89. She bested her previous top time by nearly two seconds. Julia Henderson was seventh with a time of 5:29.68.

"The Rebekahs started off the season with strong jumps and we finished the meet strong with our DMR teams finishing 1-2," Meyers said. "We had a strong lead leg by Hannah Caldwell. Katie Coker seized the lead in her leg and Abby Bateman increased the lead and Emily hammered it home."
