Sophomore Matt Smith and the Chattanooga Mocs are on the west coast for this week’s Alister Mackenzie Invitational.

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team doesn't head west of the Mississippi River often, but when they do it's in a big way. The squad is in northern California for this week's Alister Mackenzie Invitational in Fairfax.
The last time the team went west was for the 2016 Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Arizona. That was, oddly enough, hosted by Georgia State. The last trip to California was the 2012 NCAA Championships at famed Riviera Country Club in the Los Angeles area.
But this is 2019 and the Mocs are looking to put together a complete 54 holes. The previous two tournaments had their positives, but a complete performance is needed at the Meadow Club. The par 71, 6,734-yard tract traditionally is birdie rich with host Cal enjoying a phenomenal record in the event.
It's an interesting mix of veterans and youth this week for the good guys. Senior Will Porter is joined by juniors Oliver Simonsen and California native Connor Nolan. Sophomores Moritz Lammel and Matt Smith join. Simonsen captured the final lineup spot in a qualifying duel with A.J. Lintunen and Leon Bader.
It's a two-day, 54-hole journey with tee times and scores, when available, accessible at the scoring link above.

3 NOTES TO KNOW
- Connor Nolan won his first SoCon Golfer of the Week (9/25) award for his play in the Graeme McDowell Invitational. The junior from Corona, Calif., tied for 17th with level-par 216, his second career par or better event.
- The quintet traveled roughly 2,450 miles (distance between McKenzie Arena & the Meadow Club). That just beats Hawaii's 2,444 approximate miles to play in the event.
- The "others" bug plagued the squad in the opening two events. The counting cards included 27 scores of double bogey (19) or higher (8) in the Carpet Capital (16) and Graeme McDowell (11).
