GREENSBORO, N.C. --- It was another set piece score for the Chattanooga Mocs who came away with a 1-0 victory against UNC Greensboro on a Sunday afternoon at UNCG Soccer Stadium that was experiencing the remnants of Hurricane Ian.
"Great win against a very good UNCG team," Mocs head coach
Gavin McKinney said. "Getting points on the road is difficult so to take six points from this weekend is huge."
Chattanooga improves to 6-3-2 overall and have started the Southern Conference season 4-0 for the first time since 2004 to stand alone atop the league.
The teams battled throughout the first half and neither was able to find the net. It would be the Mocs' first corner kick of the match, coming in the 63
rd minute that made the difference.
Birna Johannsdottir served the ball into the six-yard box and the Spartans' keeper got a hand on the ball, but instead, UNCG directed it into the net for an own goal. That would stand as the only score in the match.
Chattanooga edged UNCG 11-10 on shots and had a slight 5-4 shots on goal advantage. Four different UTC players had a pair of shots and keeper
Caroline Ekern pulled down four saves.
"The group is working and fighting so hard for each other," McKinney added. "As always, we are extremely proud of the team, and we will continue to push forward."
Chattanooga returns to the Scenic City for a three-game homestand that starts Friday against Samford. The match will kick off at 6:00 p.m. and will be carried live on ESPN+.
