Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Goal from Salinas Earns Draw for Mocs at Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. --- Chattanooga freshman Clarissa Salinas was in the right spot to pick up the rebound for her first collegiate goal, scoring the equalizer for the Mocs in a 1-1 tie at Georgia State Thursday night in non-conference women's soccer action.

With less than four minutes on the clock, the Mocs sent a shot in off a throw in that was deflected away inside the 18-yard box. Freshman Caroline Richvalsky picked up the ball at the edge of the box and fired a shot that was knocked down at the near post but not collected by Georgia State's keeper Jaddah Foos.

Salinas charged in and sent the rebound back at the goal off her right foot, it into the right side of the net tying the match 1-1 in the 87th minute.

"Proud of the team and their effort tonight," Mocs head coach Gavin McKinney said. "Georgia State is a very good side. To go down a goal and come back showed great spirit."

In a defensive battle, neither team was able to find the net in the first half, but not for want of trying. It would be more than 12 minutes into the second half before the Panthers would break the seal.

Georgia State took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute attacking quickly after the Mocs were unable to convert a free kick from just outside the box. The Panthers went on the attack and Bree Barley went nearly uncovered toward the Mocs' goal. She got the shot off just as UTC keeper Caroline Ekern made an aggressive slide, taking her feet out from under her. The ball rolled toward the goal and hit off the post for the go-ahead goal.

Chattanooga outshot Georgia State 13-5 with a 6-3 shots on goal advantage. Caroline Ekern had two saves while Foos pulled in five. The Panthers had three first half corners while Chattanooga's three came in the second half.

"Hopefully we can use the second half performance as momentum going forward," McKinney said.

The Mocs will remain on the road with a Sunday match at Austin Peay. The game is set to kick off at 2:00 p.m. Eastern time. Follow the action on GoMocs.com.
