Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision Sunday at UNCG

Chattanooga is tied with Furman for fourth in the Southern Conference regular season standings.

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- The Chattanooga Mocs soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Mocs move to 10-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in Southern Conference action while the Spartans improve to 6-9-2 on the year and 2-4-1 against the league.

The first half was a defensive battle with neither team finding the net and eight shots total between the two.

In the second half, UNCG's leading scorer Caroline Woods reentered the game after leaving in the first with an injury. She scored the first goal in the 47th minute and picked up her second a little more than six minutes later, hitting into the other side of the net.

Kennedy Heavrin took advantage of a mishit in the box. UNCG failed to get a foot on the ball to clear it out and Heavrin got it past the keeper and into the bottom right corner to cut the Spartan lead in half.

Chattanooga had a couple more chances late in the match but were unable to find the net.

Caroline Richvalsky had four shots with three on goal for the Mocs and Heavrin had two shots. UNCG outshot the Mocs 11-7 and edged UTC 5-4 on shots on goal. Caroline Ekern had three saves including one early in the match that she pushed up to the crossbar.

A LOOK TOWARD THE PLAYOFFS
The Mocs, currently tied with Furman for fourth in the SoCon standings, will take on Samford on the road next Sunday in Birmingham to close out the regular season. Western Carolina secured the regular season title with its win Sunday against VMI. ETSU and Samford are currently tied for second and the Mocs are tied with Furman for fourth. Chattanooga can finish no better than fourth. Stay tuned as multiple scenarios will play out next week.

FROM HEAD COACH GAVIN McKINNEY
"Disappointing result. We started the match off brilliantly and felt we had things under control. UNCG grew into the game, though, and punished us twice to start the second half. Credit them for playing well today."

"We need to recover and regroup as we push for a strong finish to SoCon play."
