This Week in Women's Basketball History - December 17-23

2023-24 is the 50th season of women's basketball at UTC. We will travel back in time to explore the Mocs history one week at a time.
 
The Mocs, also known as the Mocettes and Lady Mocs in previous seasons, are 55-34 for all games played December 17-23 and sport and 20-13 record at home. Chattanooga went 8-7 in Maclellan Gym and 12-6 in The McKenzie Arena.
 
In Southern Conference play, UTC was 15-3. In tournaments played around the country and Mexico, the Mocs won 75 percent of the games (21-7).
 
UTC claimed victories over Alabama, Florida, Georgia State, Indiana State, Iowa State, Mississippi State, San Francisco, South Florida, #7 Stanford, Vanderbilt and West Virginia.
 
In 2014, the Mocs took down it's second Top 10 foe in the same season, beating #7 Stanford 54-46 at the Roundhouse. Just three week prior, UTC beat #4 Tennessee at home. Those two wins, and a 25-game win streak, led the Mocs to a national ranking for just the second time in program history.
 
Despite not scoring a single field goal in the final 11:26 of the game and getting outscored 12-10 by the Cardinal over the that span, the Mocs held on for an eight-point victory.
 
Freshman guard Keiana Gilbert scored just four points in the game, but hit the Mocs' final jumper of the game to make it a 44-34 game with 11:26 remaining. Stanford pulled within three points twice, but the Mocs were a stellar 10-of-12 from the charity stripe down the stretch to hold on for the win.
 
Chelsey Shumpert led all scorers with a career-high 18 points including five from deep, also a career-best. Moses Johnson added 10 points in 14 minutes and Jasmine Joyner just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. The sophomore had five blocked shots in the game.
 
Chattanooga held Stanford to a season-low for points and its lowest field goal percentage of the year at 27.7 percent. The Cardinal averaged eight 3-pointers per game before tonight and were just 4-of-7 from long range. Not a single Stanford player was able to reach double figures.
 
The Mocs hosted three tournaments during this week in their history, winning all six games. Hall of Fame head coach Jim Foster guided the Mocs to wins over Morgan State and North Carolina A&T in the 2014 Chattanooga Classic while Craig Parrott went 4-0 in the Lady Mocs Invitational. UTC edged North Alabama 85-84 and handled Tennessee Tech easily 84-65 in 1987. In 1996, the Mocs beat UNC Asheville (62-57) and Troy State (62-59) in nailbiters.
 
The Mocs beat Florida in the Gator Holiday Classic and Katie Burrows guided UTC to the Georgia State Holiday Classic title with a thrilling overtime win over the host Panthers in 2020.
 
Chattanooga won the Seahawk Holiday Classic in 2015 and won the South Florida Invitational 10 years apart in 1983 and again in 1993.

TITLE IX ENABLES EQUALITY FOR WOMEN IN SPORTS
In 1972 Congress enacted the Title IX of the Education Amendments stating: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
 
50 SEASONS OF CHATTANOOGA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The 2023 season for the Chattanooga women's basketball team marks a major landmark for the program and the university, as UTC women's basketball officially celebrates its 50th season of competition as a university sponsored athletic program. Following the adoption of the Title IX legislation back in 1972, UTC added women's basketball, tennis and volleyball programs to its roster of athletic teams, bringing on five decades of history and success for each of the teams. Chattanooga WBB will be putting on multiple promotions and content pieces throughout the 2023-24 season to celebrate the program's history, culminating in the team hosting its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion during the Mocs' February 3 matchup against Furman at McKenzie Arena.
