NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Chattanooga's
Zoey Mize found the net in the Mocs 3-1 loss at Vanderbilt in the women's soccer season opener in Nashville.
In the 84
th minute, Mize took the throw in from
Birna Johannsdottir and turned on her defender. From well outside the 18-yard box, Mize took advantage of the Vanderbilt keeper playing forward and lofted a left-footed shot over her head and off her fingertips into the top left corner of the goal.
Mize was on her way to another attempt just moments later when she was called offside with a clear path to the goal. She led Chattanooga with two shots of the Mocs six shots on the night.
Mackenzie Smith and
Caroline Richvalsky each had a shot on goal in the match and
Birna Johannsdottir and
Hannah Opie each recorded a shot.
Caroline Ekern recorded a career-high seven saves with five in the second half.
Vanderbilt scored the first goal of the match in the sixth minute and added a second in the 29
th minute. The Mocs held the Commodores scoreless through the next 52 minutes. The third goal that all but iced the match was scored in the 77
th minute. VU outshot UTC 19-6 with 10 shots on goal.
Chattanooga remains on the road to take on Tennessee Tech Sunday evening in Cookeville. The match is set to kick off at 7:00 p.m. Eastern time.
