CHATTANOOGA---Two more Chattanooga Mocs are in the limelight of national honors with the Thursday announcement of the Buck Buchanan Award presented by Fed Ex Ground Watch List. Seniors Kam Brown and 2022 Southern Conference Defensive Play of the Year
Jay Person take their rightful spots among the group of leaders. The full list of 35
is found here.Â
Â
"Jay and Kam earned their spots on this list," Coach
Rusty Wright commented. "The impact they have on what we do defensively is easy to see. They're All-Americans for good reason."
Â
Person was tied for eighth as a finalist in the voting a year ago. He earned SoCon DPOTY with a league-leading 17.5 tackles for loss while tying teammate
Devonnsha Maxwell for sack leadership with 8.0, a half ahead of fellow linemate
Ben Brewton (7.5).
Â
Brown took the secondary by storm last year earning All-America honors alongside Person and Maxwell on multiple teams including first team per the Bluebloods. He was one off the
national lead in interceptions with six having to settle for the SoCon co-lead.
Â
Person and Brown are two of four SoCon competitors on this year's initial list. The duo is joined by Mercer's Isaac Dowling and Western Carolina's Antoine Williams.
Â
The Buck Buchanan Award is given annually to the top defensive player in the FCS. Its namesake played at Grambling before an impressive NFL career including a Super Bowl win the Kansas City Chiefs earning Hall of Fame honors both in college and the pro football.
Â
Brown and his defensive backfield are today's preview highlight linked below. The Mocs open the season Sept. 2 at North Alabama.
