Descriptive Word
Emerging. Look for this group to follow the lead of two of its most prominent members. Heading into 2022, the secondary returned one of five starters. At the end of the campaign, Kam Brown established himself on the national stage with multiple All-America honors, while Reuben Lowery III proved to be a lynchpin in the defense. Entering 2023, four of five starters return with only long-time starting corner CaMiron Smith departing. Competition is fierce with a talented group of transfers and freshman signees in the Scenic City. This crew looks to be a strength at the back of another strong defensive unit.

Class Breakdown

Notes to Know…
  • Senior Kam Brown tied for second in the nation last year with six interceptions. It was the most in a single season in the program since Lucas Webb had six in 2014. Only five Mocs recorded more:
    8 – Phillip Aldridge (1985), Reggie Solomon (1987)
    7 – Bucky Wolford (1966), Mike Cope (1970), Alphonso McDaniel (1979)
  • Brown and junior Reuben Lowery III both had pick 6s last season. Lowery's was a 45-yarder in the season-opening win over Wofford, while Brown's 53-yard effort put an early exclamation point in the triumph over Mercer. They're the first secondary pair with pick 6s in league play in the same season for the Mocs since 2015 (Lucas Webb, 35 vs. Furman/Se'maje Kendall, 28 at VMI).
  • Grad transfer Clay Fields III came from Marist in January. He was a 2021 All-American safety for the Red Foxes and 2-time first team All-Pioneer League (2021-22). He'll compete with returning starters Jordan Walker and Josh Battle.
  • Six different student-athletes return with career starts in the UTC secondary: Brown (14), Lowery (10), Battle (9), Walker (9), Romeo Wykle (4) and Telly Plummer (2)
  • Last Mocs DB in the NFL? Super Bowl Champ Kareem Orr played with the Tennessee Titans (2019-20) and L.A. Rams (2021). Longest tenure? Recently retired corner/slot Buster Skrine played 158 games in 11 seasons with Cleveland (4), N.Y. Jets (4), Chicago (2) and San Francisco/Tennessee (1). His 11 seasons trail only Hall of Famer Terrell Owens (15) and defensive end Jack Gregory (13).
