Women’s Basketball Returns Home to Host Wofford in Another Battle Between Top Two SoCon Teams

Mocs carry an eight-game home win streak into Thursday’s game. UTC has yet to lose a game in 2024 calendar year (6-0).

CHATTANOOGA --- UTC women's basketball is back at the Roundhouse this week, starting first on Thursday, February 1 when the Mocs play host to the Wofford Terriers for the team's Women in Sports game.

The Mocs (17-3, 5-0 SoCon) currently sit atop the Southern Conference standings as they ride a six-game win streak that includes starting off a perfect 5-0 in league play. This game, however, will be one of their toughest tests yet with the second-place Terriers (12-7, 4-1 SoCon) coming to town for a rematch of the 2023 SoCon Tournament Championship game.

Tipoff for Thursday's game is slated for 7 p.m. ET in McKenzie Arena, and fans can head to ESPN+ or 96.1 FM/100.3 FM/1070 AM to either stream or listen in to the broadcast of the game. Live stats will also be available on GoMocs.com.

ABOUT CHATTANOOGA (17-3, 5-0 SoCon)
The Mocs continue to dazzle as the Southern Conference season wages on, with Chattanooga starting the season off a perfect 5-0 in league play to sit first in the conference. With key wins over ETSU and UNCG, the Mocs are poised to make another run for SoCon gold after a season-place regular season finish and SoCon Tournament win a year ago. UTC currently leads the league in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and three-point percentage as a team, not to mention that their 54.4 scoring defense ranks as the 13th-best in the entire NCAA. The Mocs are led by Jada Guinn, who is coming off a career-high 30-point outing against Western Carolina. Guinn took home yet another SoCon Player of the Week award following the performance.

ABOUT WOFFORD (12-7, 4-1 SoCon)
A strong start to league play currently has the Terriers slotted into the second-place spot in the Southern Conference right behind the Mocs at 4-1. Wofford relies heavily upon their three-point offense and three-point defense to carry them to their wins, as the Terriers currently lead the conference in three pointers made/game and in three-point percentage defense. Ultimately, Wofford's play can best be summed up in two words: Rachael Rose. The reigning SoCon Player of the Year is making her case to go back-to-back for the award, having won seven SoCon Player of the Week honors this season as she actively leads the league in scoring, assists and defensive rebounding.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET
The last time these two teams met, it's safe to say the stakes couldn't have been higher with the squads clashing in the 2023 Southern Conference Tournament Championship game. A strong defensive effort by the Mocs proved the deciding factor, specifically by Sigrun Olafsdottir, as the UTC was able to come out on top 63-53 to claim the program's 19th SoCon Tournament title. Raven Thompson would lead all scorers for the Mocs with 19 points. Chattanooga leads the all-time series against the Terriers 53-8.

TOP NOTES
• Guinn has been a pure bucket-getter for the Mocs this year, finishing in double-digits every single game this season. Additionally, Guinn has eclipsed the 20-point mark seven times this season including scoring 30 in her most recent game at WCU.
• Guinn has won a total of four different Player of the Week honors this season. She is a three-time SoCon POTW and one-time TSWA POTW.
• The Mocs have won their last eight home games. It marks the longest home win streak for the team since 2015-16 (nine straight wins that year).
• The duo of Guinn & Thompson has scored 659 of the Mocs' 1,300 points this year, with Guinn averaging 18.9 and Thompson averaging 14.8.
Hannah Kohn (40 3PT made this season) has her sights set on earning a new UTC freshman record for three-pointers made in a season. The current freshman record is 64 set by Lakelyn Bouldin during her freshman year in 2016-17.
• Kohn is also gunning to break a 20-year-old program record for season three-point percentage. She currently has a season 3PT percentage of .476, and the program record currently stands at .450.

50 SEASONS OF CHATTANOOGA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The 2023 season for the Chattanooga women's basketball team marks a major landmark for the program and the university, as UTC women's basketball officially celebrates its 50th season of competition as a university sponsored athletic program. Following the adoption of the Title IX legislation back in 1972, UTC added women's basketball, tennis and volleyball programs to its roster of athletic teams, bringing on five decades of history and success for each of the teams. Chattanooga WBB will be putting on multiple promotions and content pieces throughout the 2023-24 season to celebrate the program's history, culminating in the team hosting its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion during the Mocs' February 3 matchup against Furman at McKenzie Arena.
