Looking Back on those Scrappy Days of Yore

Scrappy Moore spent his entire College Football Hall of Fame Career leading his hometown Chattanooga Mocs.

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs have a proud athletics history. At the foundation of it is one man.

A.C. "Scrappy" Moore is a legend of Chattanooga sports history both on campus and in the community. Words have been written. Stories have been told. But what can be more iconic in this day & age than the mascot, a towering sledgehammer-wielding Mockingbird with a heart of blue & gold, named for "the man".

Scrappy is a College Football Hall of Famer. He's one of two to lead the Mocs joined by Frank Thomas (1925-28). When he retired after 35 seasons, he did so as the NCAA coach with the longest continuous tenure at one school.

He was a force of nature in the south. His coaching fraternity was embedded within the SEC programs that he would beat on occasion, and sometimes come close to the upset, but were always on perhaps the hardest small college schedules year in and year out of his times.

We could wax poetic for many paragraphs and pages…but we already have. Former student writer Shane Shoemaker did the written journey in a project led by MocsVision video storyteller extraordinaire Tate Johnson that tells the tale in full.

Chapter 3: The Game
Chapter 4: The Legend

It's an especially prevalent time to remember Scrappy with the trip to Knoxville this weekend. He led the Mocs in 23 of the 39 all-time meetings with all his matchups coming on the road.
