Soccer Hosts Samford Sunday in SoCon Match

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Fresh off its Southern Conference opening win at Wofford on Thursday, the Mocs return home to host league foe Samford Sunday afternoon. The match kicks off at 1:00 p.m. at Finley Stadium.

ABOUT CHATTANOOGA (2-4-3, 1-0-0 SoCon)
The Mocs opened SoCon play with a 2-1 win over Wofford. That is one of two wins on the year and extends the Mocs unbeaten streak to four games. UTC beat Jacksonville State to start the streak and tallied draws at Belmont and against Tennessee Tech. The Mocs have eight goals on the year led by Caroline Richvalsky's four. Zoey Mize is second on the conference with four assists, all to Richvalsky.
 
ABOUT SAMFORD (3-6-1, 0-1-0 SoCon)
The Bulldogs were shutout 2-0 by Western Carolina in the SoCon opener on Thursday. They are fifth in the conference for goals scored with 13 led by Layton Glisson and Fleming Dean with two each. Nine more have one each. Brooklyn Miller leads Samford with three assists. Peyton Hull has played in nine games with 31 saves while Mia Krusinski has started seven games and made 19 saves.
 
CHATTANOOGA vs. SAMFORD
The Mocs and Bulldogs have met 21 times since 1998. Samford joined the Southern Conference in 2008 and hold a 14-0-2 regular season record against UTC and are 2-0 in SoCon Tournament action. In Chattanooga, Samford leads the series 7-1-2. The Bulldogs average 1.3 goals and 11.5 shots per game.
 
LAST TIME THEY MET
The last meeting between the two programs was in double overtime in the Southern Conference Tournament in Johnson City, Tenn. Birna Johannsdottir and Caroline Richvalsky teamed up for a pair of goals in the first half. Johannsdottir scored the first in the fifth minute (4:28) and again in the 40th minute to go up 2-0 on the Bulldogs. However, a score by Samford in the 44th minute cut UTC's advantage in half at intermission. The equalizer was scored in the 81st minute to force overtime. Samford scored at the 106:07 mark of the match and held on for the win. The Bulldogs outshot the Mocs 16-5 (7-2) and had eight corners to UTC's one. Caroline Ekern made four saves in the match.
 
MOCS LAST OUTING
Chattanooga 2, Wofford 1 - Spartanburg, S.C.
The Mocs scored two goals three minutes apart in the first half to take a 2-1 Southern Conference opening win at Wofford on Thursday. Paige Thomas scored the first goal in the 17th minute, the first of her collegiate career, to put the Mocs up early. Kelly Tuerff moved up to midfield and sent a through ball to Thomas running on the left. Her shot was from outside the penalty box and over the keeper's reach. Caroline Richvalsky and Zoey Mize teamed up for the fourth time this season resulting in the game winner in the 20th minute. Her shot was low on the right under the keeper's dive. UTC outshot the Terriers 24-8 and Wofford scored one goal early in the second half. Caroline Ekern and the Mocs defense held off the Terriers for the second win this season. Richvalsky took seven shots and Paige Thomas had six shots with five on goal.
