MBB Preview: Mocs Host UNCG on Kids Free Saturday

The Chattanooga Mocs (24-4/13-2) look to clinch at least a tie for the SoCon Regular Season Crown Satruday at 5 p.m., against UNCG.

STARTING FIVE
- Chattanooga leads the SoCon at 13-2. Furman and ETSU (11-4) are tied for second with Wofford (10-5) lurking in fourth. Mercer (8-7) is fifth, while Western Carolina and UNCG (7-8) are tied in sixth. Top six seed earn a first round bye at SoCon Championships. - The Mocs' 24 wins lead the nation. Complete NCAA statistical rankings are on page 9 of the notes package.
- UTC clinches at least a share of the SoCon Regular Season title with a win. Complete schedule on page 2 of the notes package.
- Chattanooga is 20-0 when scoring 70 or more points this season. UNCG is 3-13 when giving up 70. Check out the indicators on page 10 of the notes package.
- The Mocs are shooting 37.7 percent from 3pt range, while the Spartans allow 38.1 percent from long range. They've limited the opposition to 32.1 percent (70-221) since our last meeting.
 
OPENING TIPS
- Chattanooga is fifth nationally in winning percentage (.857).
- 24 wins is a school record for REGULAR SEASON victories (23, 1992-93). It's the most triumphs overall since 24 during the 1997 NCAA Sweet 16 run. The last time with 25? 1992-93 (26-7).
- Three shy of the school record (27) set by the 1977 DII National Champions (27-5) and 1982 SoCon Champs (27-4).
- 24-4 is the best opening to a season since 1982-83 (26-3).
- 22-16 series lead, 18-13 in regular season SoCon matchups. More series notes on page 6 of the notes package.
- UTC has won 11 of 12, 19 of 21 and 21 of last 24.
- The Mocs are 40-9 (.816) in league play since start of the 2013-14 slate. They're 22-2 (.917) at home over that span.
- Only two starts better than 24-4: 1982-83 (26-3) and 1981-82 (27-3) before finishing with four losses.
- Last time 14-2 or better in the SoCon? 1992-93 (16-2). Last time 13-3? Never.
- UTC is 400-222 (.643) in regular season SoCon games, 243-67 (.784) at home.
- Mocs are 24-1 when leading at some point in second half. Outlier? At ULM.
- Leading the SoCon in scoring margin (+10.7), FG% (47.0), 3pt% defense (32.5) and blocks (4.6).

- Greg Pryor has a 2.6 A/TO ratio (66/25) at home this season.
- Eric Robertson is averaging 13.7 ppg in the last two seasons (3G) vs. UNCG making 54.5 percent (12-22) of his shots, all from 3pt range.
- Tre' McLean last eight games: 15.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.1 bpg & 1.9 spg. Shot 55.0 percent from the floor, 41.2 percent from beyond the arc, while converting 82.4 percent (28-34) at the FT line.
- Chuck Ester tied his career high with 13 points Thursday night vs. VMI.
- Justin Tuoyo loves the Roundhouse. Averages at home: 14.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg and 3.2 bpg shooting 61.6 percent from the field (53-86).
- Dee Oldham is averaging 9.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.9 steals per game in seven February outings.

HEAD COACH MATT MCCALL
- Head Coach Matt McCall is 24-4 in his first season as a head coach. He comes to Chattanooga from Florida where he was an assistant to Billy Donovan over the last four years. He is 12-0 at home.
- First Mocs ball coach to start his tenure 24-4 or better. Next best through 28 games? 20-8 by Mack McCarthy (1985-86) and Jeff Lebo (2002-03).
- McCall is a 2004 graduate of Florida. He spent 10 seasons with Billy Donovan working as a student manager (2003-06), director of basketball ops (2006-08) and assistant coach (2011-15). He spent three seasons as an assistant to Mike Jarvis at Florida Atlantic (2008-11) culminating with a school-best 21-11 mark in 2010-11.
- McCall's staff includes a former head coach, Reggie Witherspoon (Buffalo, 1999-2013), fellow former FAU assistant Peter Gash and Jesse Bopp, a former prep school head coach that most recently served as director of basketball ops for Shaka Smart at VCU. Former Gator SEC Legend Eddie Shannon is the director of basketball ops, while Jacob Kurtz is video coordinator after completing his playing career in 2015 at UF. Jordan Clark returns as graduate manager.
 
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS    
- 11-17, 7-8 in the Southern Conference. They're 2-14 on the road, 2-6 in league play.
- Head Coach Wes Miller is 56-90 in his fifth season as a collegiate head coach, all at UNCG. He is 36-46 in SoCon games. Miller has a 6-4 mark against the Mocs, 2-2 in Chattanooga.
- Spartans feature four averaging double figures in scoring: Kayel Locke (13.2), Francis Alonso (12.9), R.J. White (11.9) and Diante Baldwin (11.0).
- Baldwin is tied for the assist lead in conference matchups averaging 5.6 per contest (Eric Garcia-Wofford).
- UNCG is the top defensive rebounding team in league games grabbing 74.2 percent of its opponent's shot attempts. UTC is second in offensive rebound percentage (31.7%).
- The Spartans have a dangerous 3pt attack making 8.5 per game at a 35.3 percent clip.

5 Notes from the Jan. 21 meeting in Greensboro:
- The Mocs overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half…7th second-half comeback win of the season…largest deficit overcome this season.
- Chattanooga entered the contest first in 3pt percentage in the SoCon at 38.9 percent, while UNCG was last in 3pt percentage defense at 41.0 percent…visitors shot a blistering 50 percent (11-22) largely behind the scalding hot shooting hand of Eric Robertson (7-11).
- Season-low 25 rebounds…fewest since 22 in the home win over The Citadel on Jan. 31 last season…5-2 when out-boarded.
- +4 in turnover margin (11/15)…scored 24 points off those 15 Spartan miscues…2nd-most points off turnovers against a DI opponent behind 25 vs. Georgia.
 - Eric Robertson had a career-high 22 points…tops 21 netted against Samford on Feb. 14, 2015…1st 20-point effort of the season…career-best seven 3pt made in 11 attempts…11 attempted ties career high (at ETSU, 1/10/15).
