MBB Preview: Mocs Host Defending League Champ Wofford Thursday Night

The Chattanooga Mocs (19-3/8-1) welcome defending SoCon Champ Wofford Thursday night at 7:30 p.m., in the second game of a doubleheader with the women playing Furman at 5:30.

STARTING FIVE
- Chattanooga leads the Southern Conference at 8-1. Furman and Mercer are tied in second at 7-3 with ETSU and Wofford tied for fourth at 6-3. Complete SoCon standings are on page 8.
- The Mocs are looking for their first 20-3 start since opening the 1982-83 season (26-3). The '82 and '83 campaigns reaching 20 wins in 23 games are the fastest in school history.
- A win would give the program its 19th 20-win season and first back-to-back 20-win campaigns since 1993 (26-7) and 1994 (23-7).
- Chattanooga is 16-0 when scoring 70 or more points. Wofford has allowed 70 in 13 of 22 games and is 7-2 when limiting opponents to less than 70. Check out the indicators on page 9.
- The Mocs are top six in the nation in winning percentage (.857). See more in "Fast Breaks" on page 3 of the notes package.
 
OPENING TIPS
- Chattanooga is tied for sixth nationally in winning percentage (.864). Who else is 19-3? No. 2 North Carolina, No. 4 Maryland and No. 25 South Carolina.
- The Mocs lead the series 20-13, 11-4 in the Scenic City. More series notes on page 6.
- Third contest in a five-game-in-10-day stretch. 2-0 so far. Complete schedule on page 2.
- UTC has won six in a row, 14 of the last 15 and 16 of 18.
- Second six-game win streak in 2015-16 and fourth in the last three seasons (6 or more).
- Last three 20-3 or better openings? There are only two: 1982-83 (26-3) and 1981-82 (27-3).
- Last 19-4 start? 1983-84 squad started 20-4 reaching the second round of the NIT beating Georgia and losing to Tennessee.
- Last time 9-1 or better in the SoCon? 2013-14 (9-1). Last time 8-2? 2014-15 (9-2).
- UTC is 395-221 (.641) in regular season SoCon games, 240-67 (.782) at home.
- The Mocs are 35-8 (.814) in league play since start of the 2013-14 slate. They're 19-2 (.905) in McKenzie Arena over that span.
- Leading the SoCon in scoring margin (+9.7), FG% (46.9), blocks (4.7) and assist/turnover ratio (1.2).

- Greg Pryor is coming off a season-high 21 points in 25 minutes against The Citadel. Also four steals, his career high in a SoCon game.
- Eric Robertson has drilled two or more 3pt in 14 games this season.
- Tre' McLean averages during six-game win streak: 15.5 points, 7.0 boards, 3.2 assists and 2.5 steals per game shooting 55.0 percent (33-60) from the field, 46.7 percent (7-15) from 3pt range and 83.3 percent (20-24) from the line.
- Chuck Ester is averaging 7.4 points, 5.4 boards, 2.2 assists and 1.1 steals per contest since taking over for Casey Jones in the starting lineup (14 games).
- Justin Tuoyo's three-game averages vs. Wofford: 11.7 ppg, 6.7 rpg and 2.0 bpg shooting 52.2 percent (12-22) from the floor and 91.7 percent (11-12) from the FT line.

HEAD COACH MATT MCCALL
- Head Coach Matt McCall is 19-3 in his first season as a head coach. He comes to Chattanooga from Florida where he was an assistant to Billy Donovan over the last four years. He is 9-0 at home.
- First Mocs ball coach to start his tenure 19-3 or better. Next best through 22 games? 16-6 by Ron Shumate (1972-73), Mack McCarthy (1985-86) and Jeff Lebo (2002-03).
- McCall is a 2004 graduate of Florida. He spent 10 seasons with Billy Donovan working as a student manager (2003-06), director of basketball ops (2006-08) and assistant coach (2011-15). He spent three seasons as an assistant to Mike Jarvis at Florida Atlantic (2008-11) culminating with a school-best 21-11 mark in 2010-11.
- McCall's staff includes a former head coach, Reggie Witherspoon (Buffalo, 1999-2013), fellow former FAU assistant Peter Gash and Jesse Bopp, a former prep school head coach that most recently served as director of basketball ops for Shaka Smart at VCU. Former Gator SEC Legend Eddie Shannon is the director of basketball ops, while Jacob Kurtz is video coordinator after completing his playing career in 2015 at UF. Jordan Clark returns as graduate manager.
 
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS     
- 10-12, 6-3 in the Southern Conference. They're 3-10 on the road, 2-2 in league play.
- 7-3 in their last 10 games. Two of the losses are by one point: in OT at Mercer (70-69) and at Furman (63-62).
- Coach Mike Young is in his 14th year as a collegiate head coach, all at Wofford. He is 227-204, 9-12 against the Mocs.
- Spencer Collins is the team leader in points at 15.7 per game. He's averaging 19.0 over the last six games since our first meeting.
- Also averaging double digits: Fletcher Magee (11.3), Eric Garcia (10.9) and Justin Gordon (10.9).
- Wofford leads the SoCon in 3pt (39.5%) and FT percentage (74.8%). The Terriers are shooting 44.6 percent from 3pt range in league games.
- Individual SoCon leaders: Magee (FT%, 89.1) and Garcia (3pt%, 45.7 & A/TO Ratio, 3.4).
