MBB Preview: 1st-Place Mocs Host 2nd-Place Furman in SoCon Showdown

The Chattanooga Mocs (20-3/9-1) welcome Furman (14-10/8-3) into the Roundhouse Saturday in a matchup of the top two teams in the SoCon stadings.

- Chattanooga leads the Southern Conference at 9-1. Furman is second, 1.5 games back at 8-3. Mercer and ETSU are tied for third another half-game back at 7-3. Wofford is fifth at 6-4, while UNCG rounds out the top six at 5-5. Complete SoCon standings are on page 8 of the notes package.
- The Mocs are looking for their first 21-3 start since opening the 1982-83 season (26-3).
- Fourth contest in a seven-game-in-15-day stretch. 3-0 so far. Complete schedule on page 2 of the notes package.
- Chattanooga is 17-0 when scoring 70 or more points. Furman leads the league in scoring defense (64.0). It's given up 70 or more eight times and is 2-6 in those games. Check out the indicators on page 10 of the notes package.
- Last two games: UTC shooting 56.3 percent (67-119) from the field, 71.6 percent (53-74) inside the arc.
 
OPENING TIPS
- Chattanooga is tied for fifth nationally in winning percentage (.870). Who else is 20-3? No. 4 Maryland.

- UTC has won seven in a row, 15 of the last 16 and 17 of 19.
- Seven straight wins ties for the 10th-longest active streak in the nation - Stony Brook (14).
- Last time Chattanooga boasted eight consecutive wins? 2013-14 (10).
- Last three 21-3 or better openings? There are only two: 1982-83 (26-3) and 1981-82 (27-3).
- Last 20-4 start? 1983-84 squad started 20-4 reaching the second round of the NIT beating Georgia and losing to Tennessee.
- Last time 10-1 or better in the SoCon? 1996-97. Last time 9-2? 2014-15 (9-2).

- Leading the SoCon in scoring margin (+11.2), FG% (47.7), blocks (4.9) and assist/turnover ratio (1.3).

- Greg Pryor has a 4.33 assist/turnover ratio (13/3) over last two games.
- Eric Robertson is shooting 44.5 percent (154-346) from 3pt range over past three seasons.
- Tre' McLean has 38 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four blocks in the first two of three-game home stand. He's shooting 78.9 percent (15-19) from the field, 50 percent (1-2) from 3pt land and 77.8 percent (7-9) from the FT line over that span.
- Chuck Ester averages since taking over for Casey Jones in the starting lineup (14 games): 7.7 points, 5.4 boards, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals per contest.
- Justin Tuoyo has 89 blocks in SoCon contests which is a school record.

HEAD COACH MATT MCCALL
- Head Coach Matt McCall is 20-3 in his first season as a head coach. He comes to Chattanooga from Florida where he was an assistant to Billy Donovan over the last four years. He is 10-0 at home.
- First Mocs ball coach to start his tenure 20-3 or better. Next best through 23 games? 17-6 by Ron Shumate (1972-73).
- McCall is a 2004 graduate of Florida. He spent 10 seasons with Billy Donovan working as a student manager (2003-06), director of basketball ops (2006-08) and assistant coach (2011-15). He spent three seasons as an assistant to Mike Jarvis at Florida Atlantic (2008-11) culminating with a school-best 21-11 mark in 2010-11.
- McCall's staff includes a former head coach, Reggie Witherspoon (Buffalo, 1999-2013), fellow former FAU assistant Peter Gash and Jesse Bopp, a former prep school head coach that most recently served as director of basketball ops for Shaka Smart at VCU. Former Gator SEC Legend Eddie Shannon is the director of basketball ops, while Jacob Kurtz is video coordinator after completing his playing career in 2015 at UF. Jordan Clark returns as graduate manager.
 
SCOUTING THE PALADINS     
- 14-10, 8-3 in the Southern Conference. They're 3-8 on the road, 2-3 in league play.
- Five-game winning streak...7-3 in their last 10 games. All three losses on the road by four points or less.
- The Paladins have won their last two on the road, 68-56 at VMI and 67-65 at Samford.
- Coach Niko Medved is in his third year as a collegiate head coach, all at Furman. He is 34-53, 2-4 against the Mocs.
- Stephen Croone (16.3) and Devin Sibley (10.4) average in double digits for the Paladins. Croone is a four-year starter who has tallied 1,732 points with 582 (5.3/gm) free throws made.
- Freshman Matt Rafferty (7.2) leads the second-best rebounding margin in the SoCon at +4.5.
- Furman leads the SoCon in scoring defense (64.0).

5 Notes from the Jan. 19 meeting in Greenville:
- Chattanooga's eight-game winning streak is snapped in a 70-55 loss at Furman…now 13-3 on the season (5-3 on the road), 2-1 in the Southern Conference…the Paladins are 8-8, 2-1 in the league.
- Loss also snaps eight-game SoCon regular season winning streak…1st loss in league play since Feb. 7, 2015 at Western Carolina (73-70).
- 20 turnovers…13 in the second half…-4 turnover margin.
- Took 47 shots, the lowest total of 2015-16…fewest since 43 in last Feb. 21's win over East Tennessee State.
- Tough day at the free throw line shooting 47.4 percent making nine of 19…Furman made 14 of 20 (70%).
