Morris Wins Steeplechase at Catamount Classic

CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Haley Morris claimed the 3000 meter Steeplechase title Saturday afternoon at the Beynon Catamount Classic hosted by Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C.

Morris, running her first Steeplechase this season, was fifteen hundredths of a second shy of her personal record, covering the course in a time of 11:48.89. She was more than 36 seconds ahead of the second place finisher Hannah Kusmierz of King College and 1:11 faster than ETSU's Hannah Sokol.

"Haley winning the Steeplechase was great as this was her first this season," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "Abby had a breakout race, finally, in the 800."

Abby Bateman ran a PR time of 2:15.57 in the 800 meter run, nearly three seconds better than her previous top time set earlier this season at the Jacksonville State Gamecock Quad Invitational and less than two seconds behind Furman's Emma Kuntz, the top collegiate finisher in the race, at 2:13.67.

Bateman placed fifth in the middle distance race. Ashlynd Broling finished 14th in a time of 2:23.33, edging her personal best in the race and Hannah Caldwell came in 29th at 2:29.74.

Taylor Grayson topped her personal best in the shot put, throwing the heavy ball 11.70 meters topping her previous best throw of 10.96m set earlier this season at the Emory Invitational. Rebekah Hampton was a tenth of a meter shy of her PR at 10.50 meters and Rebekah Bryant recorded her first triple jump this season at 10.03m.

"Taylor had wonderful throws," Meyer said. "Both Beccas continued to be impressive in the triple jump."

In the 1500 meter run, Julia Henderson led the Mocs with a season-best time of 4:56.69 in the 1500m run. Hannah Caldwell was the second Chattanooga runner across the line in the race at 4:59.02 followed by Nicole Buehrle with a time of 5:00.70.

Chattanooga will return to the track next month for the Southern Conference Championships. The Mocs will head to the War Eagle Invitational hosted by Auburn University next weekend.
