Men’s Basketball Reunion Planned for Feb. 9

Several anniversaries are on tap including the 10th year for the Chattanooga Mocs 10th Southern Conference Tournament Championship in 2009. The program’s 11 total titles are by far the most by current league membership.

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs have a proud basketball history. A National Championship and more Southern Conference titles than any other member since joining the league in 1977-78, there's a lot to like. And they want to get the band back together.

The C Club announces its Men's Basketball Reunion plans for 2019. The event is Feb. 8-9 around the visit by defending SoCon Champs UNCG. The reunion is open to all men's basketball team members including coaches, managers and support staff throughout the year.

"We look forward to welcoming back all of our alums," Coach Lamont Paris shared. "We're excited for our fans to get to relive special times. The alums also get to re-connect and share stories from their playing days.

"There are few things that top reunion events whether you've been apart for two years or 20."

While there is not a focus on a specific team or era, there are several anniversaries to get excited about. It's hard to find a year that doesn't have a special ring (literally) to it. The 2018-19 campaign is no different.

It's the 10-year anniversary of the 2008-09 Southern Conference Champions. The North Division winners claimed the program's 10th SoCon Tourney title in convincing fashion with an 80-69 win over College of Charleston. That led to one of the indelible moments in school history as the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon adopted the team as his own with a week-long celebration. It culminated with six seniors – Nicchaeus Doaks, Zach Ferrell, Kevin Goffney, Khalil Hartwell, Stephen McDowell & Keyron Sheard – celebrated on the Friday night edition.

It's also the silver anniversary for the 1993-94 SoCon Champs. Yep, 25 years since the Mocs swept the regular season and tournament crowns behind SoCon Player of the Year Chad Copeland. Copeland is one of five Mocs – Willie White (1982), Keith Nelson (1992), Tim Brooks (1993) & Johnny Taylor (1997) – to claim the honor. The squad boasts four league Defensive Player of the Year nods by Z Mason (2014) before three in a row by Justin Tuoyo (2015-17).

Other anniversaries include the 30th for the 1988-89 SoCon Regular Season Champions. The 1983-84 squad hits 35 as the first NIT team. It beat Georgia in overtime a year after the Bulldogs NCAA Final Four squad. It's also 45 years since the 1973-74 Mocs became the first to win 20 games in the Scenic City.

"Chattanooga is a special place," Paris continued. "The program has a rich history. It's a great opportunity for our young guys to learn more about how special this place is from the men behind the strong winning tradition."

Former Mocs basketball team members can RSVP at this link.

The Mocs start a 3-game home stand Saturday, Jan. 12, with a visit from Samford. That's followed by Mercer (Jan. 17) and The Citadel (Jan. 19). Tickets are available on GoMocs.com or by calling (423) 266-MOCS (6627).
