ABOUT CHATTANOOGA BASKETBALL
CHATTANOOGA---Where does the time go? It's March 2019 and the Chattanooga Mocs start game No. 31, the final regular season contest of the 2018-19 season, at 2 p.m., Saturday in McKenzie Arena as Furman comes calling.
It's Senior Day with graduate transfer
Thomas Smallwood being honored pre-game. Smallwood came to the Scenic City from UAB where he graduated from in three years. He's enjoyed his most productive collegiate season this year.
Smallwood has set new career highs in every statistical category. His 18 rebounds against Cumberland in the second game is tied for fourth most in the school's DI era. The native of Bordeaux, France is averaging 6.3 points and 3.9 rebounds in 15.6 minutes per contest. He's shooting 47.5 percent from 3pt range.
The final regular season game means March Madness is just around the corner. Only two seed positions – No. 1 Wofford & No. 2 UNCG – are clinched for the Ingles SoCon Championship presented by General Shale March 8-11 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C. From there, it gets a bit wordy. We'll try our best to be concise.
Furman owns the tie-breaker of ETSU. The only way the Bucs can earn the three is with a win over Western Carolina and a Mocs win over Furman. Those are the only two teams that can finish in the three and four spots.
The five is Chattanooga's with a win over Furman or losses by Mercer (UNCG) and Samford (Wofford). A tie for fifth with Mercer or Samford gives the bad guys the five and the Mocs the six. If all three are tied for fifth, it goes Bears-Mocs-Bulldogs. Mercer owns the tie-breaker of Samford so the Bulldogs get a bye only if the Bears lose.
That brings us to the 8-10 seeds. Western Carolina and The Citadel are 4-13, one ahead of VMI at 3-14. VMI hosts the Bulldogs so a lot can happen here. Ready for an interesting chain of events? WCU holds the tie-breaker over The Citadel, The Citadel over the Keydets and VMI over the Catamounts.
Western Carolina is entrenched in the 8/9 game just not sure whether it's in a road or home uniform. If there is a 3-way tie for eighth, it's VMI-Western-The Citadel. If WCU tops ETSU and VMI beats The Citadel, it's Western-Citadel-VMI. So VMI can only be eight or 10, while The Citadel has a trifecta of options.
For our purposes, only one team matters. The Mocs will play either Furman or ETSU on Saturday, March 9, in the U.S. Cellular Center. That contest is either at 2:30 (4/5) or 8:30 p.m. (3/6).
