GAME WEEK: Friday Facts for Finley Fight Saturday Night

Defense swarms to tackle Mercer runner.

The Chattanooga Mocs defense looks to continue impressive start against a dangerous Portland State offense.

SCHEDULE | TICKETS

CHATTANOOGA---It's almost go time at Finley Stadium. The Chattanooga Mocs and Portland State Vikings are on course for a 7 p.m., kickoff on a Scenic City Saturday night. It's a battle of two teams in similar circumstances.

The Mocs and Vikings are both 0-3 with two losses on the road against FBS competition and the other in league play against a ranked opponent.

UTC: 3-69 at Tennessee | 21-24 at Georgia State | 3-10 vs. Mercer
PSU: 30-70 at Washington St. | 16-43 at Weber St. | 14-56 at Boise St.

In honor of the great David Letterman, we present the top 10 questions/notes heading into the game from the home office in Sale Creek, Tenn.

No. 10: Should I buy tickets online before coming to Finley or get them at the box office?
Good question. While we always like to keep our ticket staff busy, it's always in your best interest to purchase ahead of time. There is a $2 discount purchasing tickets online prior to coming to the game instead of purchasing at the stadium. Easy to buy here.

No. 9: Can I just get a ticket to this game or is there an option for more than one game now that the season's started?
Lot of interest in tickets this week. There is a 3-game mini-plan that gets a discount over buying game-to-game. You get to pick the three games of the last four at home to catch the Mocs at home. Check it out here.

No. 8: I hear the wide receivers are pretty good, tell me more:
It's a talented and deep wide receiver's room. Four different receivers have at least one all-conference or All-America honor during their playing careers. Junior Sam Phillips has all the headlines early with 19 receptions for 330 yards. He's 11 catches away from joining the top 10 list for career receptions. Phillips (1,615), Chris Domercant (1,701) and Javin Whatley (1,508) are all closing in on 2,000 career receiving yards in just their junior seasons.

No. 7: I love my straw hat from Right at Home as the home opener giveaway. Whatcha giving me this time around?
There are 1,000 Thundersticks at the gate. Be ready to lower the boom Saturday night.

No. 6: Speaking of the boom, how is the defense looking this week?
The defense is off to a good start. Take the Tennessee game out of the equation – which is exactly what all their opponents this year want to do – and the defense has given up 35 fewer points (34) and 40 fewer yards combined (678) over the last two games.

No. 5: Who looks like stars on defense?
Everybody knows about the starting safety trio of Josh Battle, Reuben Lowery III & Jordan Walker. All three are all-conference performers or pegged to be at that level (and are living up to it). Alex Mitchell at linebacker is also playing at that level with dominant efforts in the middle.

The corners are what pop to us early on. Juniors Taylor Smallwood and D'Arco Perkins-McAllister started the first three with true freshman Beni Mwamba as well as juniors Jeremiah Batiste and Demetrius Coleman pushing for snaps. That group has been key to the Mocs allowing just over 170 yards per game in the air the last two contests.

No. 4: What no mention of the defensive line?
The line of scrimmage is always important to this program. That hasn't changed. The Mocs have strong depth across the line led by seniors Marlon Taylor and Quay Wiggles. Fellow seniors Joseph Bakhole and Chris Victor have started on the ends. But it really is a team effort with Montrell Henderson, Jamarr Jones, E.J. Thomas, Marquise Freeman and Leroy Harris III all contributing up front with competition fierce for snaps. The defensive front recorded multiple sacks in 36 of Wright's 55 games to date.

No. 3: Tell me something about something about Portland State:
With a rushing touchdown against Boise State, senior QB Dante Chachere has 59 career touchdowns (37 pass & 22 rush). How many Mocs QBs have 50 or more career TD involvements?

Jacob Huesman (2012-15): 107 (64 pass/43 rush)
Kenyon Earl (1991-94): 61 (42/19)
B.J. Coleman (2009-11): 59 (52/7)
Steve Woods (1977-81): 57 (40/17)
Chris Sanders (1999-00): 52 (49/3)
Mickey Brokas (1970-73): 51 (35/16)

No. 2: Anyone chasing milestones or records for the good guys?
QB Chase Artopoeus is 696 yards shy of 4,000 in just 13 games played. When he reaches 4K, Chase will become the 10th Mocs QB to reach that milestone and first since Nick Tiano (2017-19) did it during Rusty Wright's first season in 2019. He ended up with 5,825. In fact, eight of the nine to get to 4,000 got to 5K as well.

No. 1: It's football so we gotta talk a lot about QBs right? How many of the nine QBs to get to 4K did it in 20 or fewer career games?
Chris Sanders (1999-00): 13 games
B.J. Coleman (2009-11): 18 games
Nick Tiano (2017-19): 19 games
