PREVIEW: Men’s Basketball Returns to Roundhouse Saturday

Jonathan Scott and the Chattanooga Mocs start a 3-game home stand Saturday afternoon with a visit from Samford.

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs return to the Roundhouse Saturday afternoon hosting Samford. The Southern Conference matchup tips off at 4:30 p.m., is the first home contest since Dec. 21 for the Mocs with six of the last seven coming on the road.
 
Chattanooga is coming off a Smokey Mountains split last weekend. It started with a win at Western Carolina before a loss at ETSU. The Mocs are 2-2 in the Southern Conference which is fifth. They're behind Wofford (5-0), Furman (4-1), ETSU (4-1) and UNCG (3-1). Mercer (1-3), The Citadel (1-3) and Samford (1-3) are in sixth followed by Western Carolina (1-4) and VMI (0-4).
 
Freshman Kevin Easley leads four in double figures at 14.6 points per game. Donovann Toatley (11.8), Ramon Vila (10.6) and Jerry Johnson, Jr. (10.0) join Easley. The squad is ever-improving offensively shooting nearly 50 percent (49.5%) from the field, 39.8 percent from beyond the arc.
 
The Bulldogs are 11-6 on the season. They're led by senior USF transfer Ruben Guerrero and junior guard Josh Sharkey. Guerrero post 14.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and a SoCon-leading 2.1 blocks per game. Sharkey adds 14.2 points, 6.6 assists and 2.7 steals per contest with the latter topping the conference steals list. Sophomore wing Kevion Nolan's 52.8 percent shooting from 3pt range also paces SoCon members.

  • 98th meeting with Samford. That's the most against any opponent in school history. That's ahead of Western Carolina (92), ETSU (86), Furman (84) and The Citadel (81).
  • 59 wins over the Bulldogs are third all-time in school history after Western Carolina (65) and The Citadel (63) and just ahead of Furman (54) and ETSU (47).
  • Six on the squad are shooting 50 percent or better in league play. Ramon Vila not only leads the team but also the conference in SoCon only field goal percentage at 69.6 percent (16-23). Justin Brown (66.7%), Thomas Smallwood (53.8%) Donovann Toatley (53.1%), David Jean-Baptiste (51.4%) and Kevin Easley (51.1%) also top the 50 percent plateau.
