ABOUT CHATTANOOGA BASKETBALL
CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs close the regular season this week with Southern Conference visits from first-place Wofford and fourth-place Furman. The positioning battle is coming down to the wire.
Two seed positions – No. 1 Wofford & No. 2 UNCG – are clinched for the Ingles SoCon Championship presented by General Shale March 8-11 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C. ETSU (12-5) and Furman (11-5) can still finish either third or fourth. Chattanooga (7-9) has the inside track for fifth with both Samford (6-10) and Mercer (6-10) lurking in sixth. The top six in the final standings earn a bye in the tourney quarterfinals. A win clinches a top 6 berth for the Mocs and likely the fifth seed depending on the verdict of Furman at Samford.
The Terriers enter the contest as the 24th-ranked team in the nation according to the AP and tied for 25th in the coaches poll. It's the first visit by a ranked team since No. 15 Georgia Tech on Dec. 14, 2009.
The last time a ranked SoCon opponent came to the Roundhouse? No. 20 College of Charleston on Feb. 13, 1999, a 58-53 loss. The Mocs are 1-1 against ranked SoCon teams in McKenzie Arena defeating No. 15 ETSU 76-74 on Jan. 21, 1991. 3-41 all-time against ranked opponents, 1-31 in the regular season.
Jerry Johnson, Jr., led three Mocs in double figures in an
80-69 Loss at Wofford in January. Johnson's 19 helped the visitors to an eight-point advantage early in the second half. It was tied 53-all with 11 minutes to play when a 14-3 spurt put the Terriers ahead for good.
