ABOUT CHATTANOOGA BASKETBALL
CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs have a busy week. It starts Thursday night at VMI. The Mocs and Keydets match up on ESPN3 at 7 p.m.
It's a tight turnaround with the road contest Thursday before an overnight trip back to Chattanooga, a day of class time and practice then hosting UNCG on Saturday. The Spartans contest is a Blackout with fans encouraged to wear black clothing to the game. There will be 1,000 Blackout t-shirts distributed at the gates. It's also Basketball Reunion Weekend with all eras of Mocs basketball returning to the Scenic City.
But first is the second of a home-and-home series with VMI. The Mocs are taking a swing at their first regular season sweep of a SoCon opponent since Western Carolina and Wofford in 2016-17. The last time the program took both games from the Keydets was 2015-16.
Kevin Easley continues to pace the Mocs at 15.0 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
Donovann Toatley (11.7),
Ramon Vila (10.7) and
Jerry Johnson, Jr., (10.5) also score in double figures for the squad. SoCon scoring leader Bubba Parham paces VMI at 20.7 points per contest with Garrett Gilkeson adding 11.0 points and a team-high 6.5 boards per game.
The Mocs used an inspired defensive performance, along with long-range shooting, to start Southern Conference action with an 83-65 win over VMI in McKenzie Arena on Dec. 9. It was the third win in a row for the Mocs along with the third straight contest keeping their opponent in the 60s.
Easley's 26 points led four Chattanoogans in double figures adding eight rebounds.
David Jean-Baptiste chipped in 18 points, six rebounds and five assists in an emergency start at the point, as
Jerry Johnson, Jr., and
Jonathan Scott joined them with 17 and 11, respectively.
The Keydets were paced by Bubba Parham's 13 points. The SoCon's leading scorer was held nearly nine points below his season scoring average at the time.
