CHATTANOOGA---The 12th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs begin the 2022 campaign doubling down on openers. Not only is Saturday the season's initial contest, but it's also the start of the Southern Conference slate. Don't miss the 6 p.m., kickoff in Finley Stadium in Chattanooga.

The battle features the Mocs and a Wofford squad looking to bounce back from an unusual off year. The home squad returns 14 starters with all but two of the positions without a returning starter featuring the second on the depth chart from 2021.

This week's promotion is a Staycation encouraging the Chattanooga fans to stay downtown and take advantage the Scenic City as a tourist destination and join the masses at Finley.

QUOTABLE
Senior DB CaMiron Smith on opening at home:
"It gives a chance to showcase what we've been working throughout camp, all summer really. It's a chance to start the season in a more comfortable environment in front of our home crowd."

Senior LB Ty Boeck on the importance of starting with a league game:
Last year, we didn't come out the way we wanted. I think we kind of went in there thinking we were the best team instead of trying to prove it. This year, we need to go into this weekend with the mindset to work and get the job done play by play."

3 NOTES TO KNOW
  • Junior running back Ailym Ford is rocketing up the rushing record books in every category. The two immediate numbers to look out for are 40 yards and four touchdowns. His 2,244 career rushing yards are 40 shy of the top 10 behind Robert Smith (1967-70) with 2,284. His 20 rushing scores are tied for ninth all-time and four out of the top 5 with fifth shared by Mike Smith (1977-80) and Tony Merandino (1975-78) with 24 apiece.
  • Two Mocs on opposite sides of the lines have a lot in common. OL McClendon Curtis and DT Devonnsha Maxwell are among the best in the country – at any level as evidenced by the close scrutiny of the Senior Bowl Watch List – but they also share being their sixth year of the program. Both have graduated and could be anywhere in the country right now, but their loyalty to their teammates and community is the stuff of legends. They, along with fight-year seniors Ty Boeck and CaMiron Smith, join the likes of Cole Strange, Jerrell Lawson, Rashun Freeman, Brandon Dowdell and Jordan Jones starting parts of five different campaigns for the program.
  • Maxwell is just 7.5 sacks (29.5) shy of the school and conference career sack record held by Davis Tull '14 with 37.0.
